We recently connected with Jerry Carnell Jr. and have shared our conversation below.
Jerry, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I fully attribute my resilience to the 8 years that I served in the Army. During that time I had the opportunity to assess and be selected for Special Operations. This meant I had to endure some of the toughest military schools that the Army had to offer, I had to deploy to hostile environments, and still learn to maintain life at home. I would say life in the military wasn’t always a success story for me but it taught me that quitting isn’t the option, it will always get better.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Owner/Operator of the premier pet transportation company “Gohard Pet Transport”. We specialize in transporting your furry friends across the U.S. while prioritizing safety and top of the line customer service. I am really excited about this venture because it helps people re-connect and connect with their pets. Whether they are moving across the country, rescuing, or purchasing from a breeder, we serve them all! I knew this was my calling because no matter what I always return home with my heart filled with joy.
Right now we are currently working on a few more products to add to the company. We will soon be rolling out our “flight nanny” branch. This helps us transport animals through the air within the states and outside of the states. I am super excited about our flight nanny branch. I won’t go into too much details about our other project due to my team wanting to keep it quiet, but I truly feel it will be a huge convenience to the pet industry!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I truly believe the three qualities one must possess before even embarking on any journey are accountability, discipline, resilience. I feel like these three go hand in hand but are powerful together when mastered.
Accountability is very important because it involves taking responsibility for your actions, decisions and what the outcome of those actions are. Being accountable helps you analyze your mistakes, make adjustments, and stay committed to the end goal.
“Discipline equals freedom” – Jocko Willink. This is one of the tougher ones. When on your journey to success, it can get lonely and the outside world becomes so attractive. When you have the discipline to get up and do all the right things (small or big) even when your body/mind is trying to trick you, you become as I like to call it “locked in”. Discipline helps you stay focused, consistent, and committed to the end goal which is crucial.
Last but certainly not least, resilience. I wish I could tell you the road to success was as easy as speaking it into existence. When you choose this path you have chosen the hard road in life. You MUST possess resilience and have the ability to bounce back from any losses, road blocks, or troubles.
My advice to folks who are early in their journey would be first to find your “why”. Why have you chosen this path. Without you why it will be hard to achieve the end goal. After you have found that, hold on for the ride and enjoy the process. Whatever you do, don’t quit. NSDQ.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was allow me to be free and grow into myself. I’m such a creative thinker. My parents never forced their beliefs on me nor did they force me to choose one path and stick with it. In fact, they encouraged me and my siblings to be free and be ourselves. I often tell my parents how thankful I am for this alone. It has allowed me to grow and be as creative as anyone could ever imagine. Oftentimes my mind can be so creative, I come up with something no one believes will work. Not because it’s never worked but because it’s never been done before. I like to take ideas like that and watch them grow into something amazing.
