We recently connected with Jess and have shared our conversation below.
Jess, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Striving to make each piece of art better than the last makes it easy to keep creativity alive. I compete with myself every day.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been commissioned for a wide variety of art since my first magazine cover when I was eleven. People who knew me would have requests and offer money and so I learned to do many types of art including illustration and fine art. I decided not to have a temperament about it but to be customer service oriented which meant I could earn a living and do what I loved best. Currently I am painting couples live at weddings and in my studio from photos couples send. The venues can be an interesting challenge like a recent one at the San Diego Zoo Wild Safari Park. The client requested a few animals to be included in the background. It was fun painting a rhino and a giraffe! I would have liked to show them their portraits on canvas but am no longer sure which animals they are since they roam around the zoo.
If you would like to watch me paint I have several youtube channels.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There is no shortcut improving. I strive to make every piece better than the last which means studying those whose skills I admire and learning from each of them. I am very critical of my own work. My great aunt artist Julia Greenwood told me to never be satisfied because that is the day I would stop improving. I listened to her. It was the best advice I ever received.

How would you describe your ideal client?
They are a fan of art and appreciate the work it takes to create great art.
