We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jesse Dymond a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jesse, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, keeping that creative spark alive means staying curious and always looking for new perspectives, whether I’m photographing a wedding, a family milestone, or a quiet moment in nature.
I intentionally carve out time to explore personal projects and experiment with different styles, lighting, and compositions outside of client work. Sometimes that means going on a spontaneous sunrise hike with my camera or doing something that challenges me to see familiar subjects in unexpected ways.
Connecting with other creatives, whether they’re photographers or other artists, also fuels my inspiration. There’s something incredibly energizing about exchanging ideas and seeing the world through someone else’s lens.
Ultimately, I remind myself that photography is about storytelling and emotion, not just technical perfection. Staying grounded in that belief helps me continue to evolve and bring genuine, fresh energy to every session I photograph.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Thank you for the opportunity to share a bit about Southern Shots Photography. I’m Jesse, founder and lead photographer, and my passion lies in capturing authentic moments that tell real stories. At Southern Shots Photography, we specialize in creating timeless, heartfelt images — whether it’s engagements, weddings, portraits, families, or commercial projects — with an emphasis on natural light, genuine emotion, and a comfortable experience for our clients.
What makes Southern Shots Photography special is our dedication to making every session personal and meaningful. We believe every person, every couple, every business has a unique story worth telling through imagery that lasts. Our goal is to create images that not only look beautiful but truly reflect the spirit and personality of those we work with.
I’m excited about the future as we continue to grow and deepen our relationships within the community, offering not just photography but an experience that clients will remember fondly for years to come.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities and skills stand out as the most impactful in my journey:
Consistency and Discipline — Showing up regularly and committing to improving every day has been key. Photography isn’t just about talent; it’s about putting in the time to practice, learn, and deliver quality work consistently.
Attention to Detail — Technical skill absolutely matters, but the ability to capture genuine moments and tell a compelling story through images is what truly sets work apart.
Adaptability and Continuous Learning — The creative industry evolves quickly, so staying curious and open to new techniques, styles, and technologies has helped me stay relevant and grow. Whether it’s mastering new software or understanding the business side better, being adaptable has been crucial.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to focus on these key areas:
Build a consistent routine for practicing your craft; even small daily efforts add up. Set goals that push you just enough to improve steadily without burning out.
Practice connecting with people as often as possible and understanding the stories behind your subjects. This empathy will translate into more powerful, meaningful work.
Stay curious and never stop learning. Follow industry leaders, don’t be afraid to take workshops, experiment with new ideas, and be open to feedback — growth comes from pushing beyond your comfort zone.
Remember, success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the combination of passion, persistence, and openness to growth that shapes a fulfilling creative career.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I firmly believe it’s better to be well-rounded by investing effort in improving areas where you aren’t as strong. While it’s natural to lean on your strengths, growth happens when you challenge yourself to develop skills outside of your comfort zone. This approach not only makes you more adaptable but also deepens your understanding of your craft as a whole.
In my experience with Southern Shots Photography, there were times early on when I focused mainly on what I was good at—like the creative side of shooting and editing—but struggled with the business and client communication aspects. Eventually, I realized that neglecting those “weaker” areas was holding me back from reaching new opportunities and delivering a better overall experience for my clients.
By deliberately improving my organizational skills, learning marketing strategies, and honing client relations, I became more confident and well-prepared to handle all facets of the business. This well-rounded approach helped me build stronger relationships and deliver work that was not only beautiful but also professional and timely.
So, while it’s very important to play to your strengths, investing time in your weaker areas creates a foundation for long-term success. It’s about becoming versatile, resilient, and capable of navigating whatever challenges come your way.
