Meet Jessel Ramos

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessel Ramos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jessel, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’ve learned to be effective/ successful even when I’m the only one that looks like me in the room by following these principles of confidence, adaptability, authenticity, and continuous learning, I have not only been able to be effective and successful but also open the way for people who look like me to be more accepted in these places.

I believe that by being confident in who I am and the value I bring, I challenge stereotypes and preconceived notions that may exist. When others see my success and contributions, it helps break down barriers and encourages a more inclusive environment for individuals who share similar characteristics. I strive to be a role model for those who might be facing similar challenges, knowing that every step I take can inspire them to keep going.

Additionally, by being adaptable and embracing different perspectives, I create a collaborative atmosphere where diverse voices are heard and valued. The more we appreciate the strengths and unique experiences that individuals bring to the table, the more we can dissolve biases and promote acceptance.

Furthermore, my commitment to authenticity allows others to see that being true to oneself is not only possible but significant. By embracing my culture, background, and personal experiences, I demonstrate that diversity should be celebrated, encouraging others to do the same.

Lastly, my dedication to continuous learning ensures that I stay informed, adaptable, and educated on new perspectives and approaches. By constantly seeking growth, I am better equipped to navigate diverse environments and bridge the gap between different backgrounds, therefore facilitating acceptance and understanding.

Knowing that there are little kids watching, I am driven to set an example of resilience and success. I want to inspire them to pursue their dreams and never give up, regardless of the challenges they may face. Every step I take in these situations is motivated by the desire to create a more inclusive world and a better future.

Overall, by following these principles, I have been able to not only thrive personally but also pave the way for others who look like me to be more accepted in these places. It is a continuous journey, and with each success and every little change I bring, I find the motivation to keep pushing forward and make a positive impact.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, there were three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had the most significant impact. The first one was learning how to speak in public and overcoming my stage fright. In order to take my business to the next level, I had to push myself out of my comfort zone and consistently put myself in situations where I had to speak in public and talk about my business. The more I practiced, the better I became at it.

The second impactful skill was time management. Being a single mom, it was initially challenging for me to be on time and balance all my responsibilities. However, I sought guidance from mentors and coaches who had more experience in the entrepreneurial world. I learned from them, implemented their strategies, and took notes on how they managed their time effectively. Soon enough, I was able to book more events, clients, and personal time while avoiding the guilt of being late.

Customer service is my favorite skill, and I have over 12 years of experience in this field. I genuinely enjoy catering to my clients and ensuring they have the best experience possible. I make it a point to spoil my clients and make them feel special because they truly are.

One skill I am currently working on is organization. Despite having ADHD and not taking medication, I am actively implementing various techniques I have learned from others. Reading books on organization has allowed me to tailor those strategies to fit my own needs, my family’s needs, and my lifestyle.

My advice for those starting their own journey, whether in business, projects, or events, is to identify the areas where you need the most help. Determine what is holding you back from reaching the next level. Seek out mentors, coaches, or even utilize free resources on social media or YouTube. Become a student of these resources to develop the skills you need to work on. Once you have reached the level that free resources allow, then consider investing in paid knowledge to reach higher levels of success. Remember that there is no one quite like you, and you are special in your own way.

Finally, I would like to emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy personal lifestyle to excel in your professional life. It all starts with taking care of yourself. Focus on self-care, well-being, and finding a balance that works for you. When you feel your best personally, you can bring your best to your professional endeavors.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The most helpful individuals in my journey have been my sister Maria Horton, my brother-in-law Kyle Horton, my close friend Musulain Toomer, Dr. Domonique Revere-Lincoln, and my mother. Each of them has played a significant role in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills, qualities, and knowledge needed for success.

My sister Maria, a highly successful associate broker and realtor, brought me to a new country and inspired me to pursue my dreams. With her support, I gained the confidence to pursue an education and eventually start my own business.

My brother-in-law Kyle, an entrepreneur with his company, Horton Brother’s Realty, has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. He shared his knowledge of business and helped me study for my Esthetics license. His guidance and mentorship have been invaluable to me.

My close friend Musulain Toomer, from Nigeria, has been a pillar of positivity and inspiration. We started teaching dance classes together, and her friendship has been crucial in my journey of personal and professional development.

Dr. Domonique Revere-Lincoln, another influential figure in my life. She has HR firm it’s called HRemedy Consulting. She has provided guidance and support in my personal and professional development. Together, we have created curated events called PowHERhr+, offering women a safe space to unwind and connect. Our collaboration on PowHERhr+ has allowed us to create a platform that empowers women and fosters personal growth. Her expertise and passion have been instrumental in the success of our events.

Lastly, my mother has also been incredibly supportive and has witnessed my transformation firsthand. Despite our ups and downs, she has always been there for me, providing balance and assistance when needed. I am grateful for her presence in my life, knowing that I can rely on her as I pursue my dreams.

The quote, “You are a reflection of the five people you spend the most time with,” has resonated with me deeply. Recognizing the importance of surrounding myself with positive influences, I have made a conscious effort to remove negative people from my life and focus on nurturing relationships with those who uplift and support me.

Through the support, guidance, and love of these individuals, I have experienced personal growth, accomplished milestones, and overcome obstacles. They have shown me the power of belief in myself and the impact of surrounding myself with people who inspire and motivate me to become the best version of myself.

Remembering the value of a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, has been essential in my journey. By taking care of my mental health, working on personal development, and surrounding myself with positive influences, I have been able to achieve significant progress in my personal and professional life.

I am grateful for the influence and support of these individuals in my life, and I credit them for helping shape me into the person I am today.
