We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Belizaire a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Growing up in a Haitian household with a resilient single mother and a strong, faith-filled grandmother shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand until I got older. They taught me to walk with my head held high, to know my worth, and to never forget the power of prayer. As a kid, it was hard to see the beauty in those lessons—especially when my peers made me feel like an outsider because of the way I dressed or the mole on my forehead that always drew attention. But my mom would remind me, again and again, that my differences made me special. She told me I was one of a kind—full of love, talent, and beauty. And over time, I started to believe her. That quiet strength they poured into me became the foundation of my confidence, and now I carry it proudly, knowing exactly where I come from and who I am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an artist at heart with a deep love for fashion, beauty, and creative expression. My journey began early doing hair at just nine years old, experimenting with makeup came into play by eleven, and starting nails at sixteen. My passion for makeup was inspired by my mom, a true diva who always carried herself with elegance, style, and confidence. Watching her inspired me to take pride in my appearance and explore beauty as a form of art. In 2010, I attended cosmetology school and graduated, though I didn’t get certified until later. Becoming a mother shifted my priorities, but I never let go of my passion. I kept it alive through weekly self-care ritual like doing my nails, perfecting my makeup and soon friends began asking me to glam them up too. That slowly evolved into paid gigs, photoshoots, and more.
During the pandemic, I taught myself how to do nails professionally, combining my love for art and design with the skills I already had. With encouragement, I turned that passion into a business, and that’s how GorJess Glow was born. For the past five years, I’ve built a brand that specializes in custom glow art,I even mix and produce my own glow pigments. As a nail tech, I hand-draw all my designs, isolate glow elements to make them pop, and incorporate intricate details that make each set a true masterpiece.I also have a strong talent for special effects makeup, which adds another layer to my creative offerings. I run every aspect of my business from social media to client communication to ensure everything feels personal and intentional.
Looking ahead, I plan to open a series of nail salons and supply stores , while also manufacturing my own line of glow acrylics. My goal is to grow a broader audience and build a loyal clientele that loves standing out and embracing their uniqueness. I truly love what I do,it combines art, fashion, and fearless individuality. At GorJess Glow, I don’t just help my clients glow I help re-define their Glow

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are creativity, resilience, and self-teaching. Creativity has been the foundation of everything I do from hand-drawing nail designs and mixing my own glow pigments to mastering makeup and fashion. It’s what sets me apart and gives my work its unique signature. Resilience helped me keep going, even when I had to put my passions on hold to become a mother or when I didn’t have the business background to fully launch right away. I never gave up, I adapted and kept my passion alive through self-care and small gigs. Lastly, the ability to self-teach was a game changer. I learned how to do nails professionally during the pandemic by researching, watching tutorials, and practicing constantly. That mindset turned a personal need into a thriving business.
For anyone early in their journey, my advice is: stay curious and willing to learn. You don’t need to have it all figured out to start. Use the resources available to you, trust your own creativity, and don’t let a lack of formal background stop you. Keep showing up for yourself and your vision ,your dedication will take you further than you think.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The person who has been most helpful in helping me overcome challenges and build the skills I needed to succeed is my husband, Mitch. He was one of the first people to show me what a real business looks like through his own brand, HungerGang Brand and as a music artist
°Cool Green . Watching him run his business and do what he loves with music inspired me to produce my own, and he’s been by my side every step of the way. Mitch gave me my very first client little does he realize and has continued to be more than just moral support, he’s hands-on. He sits in my chair, helps me barter for supplies, hands out my business cards literally to ever and never misses a chance to repost my videos and pictures or shout me out on social media. He even designed my logo yes my Logo . Having someone who believes in my vision as much as I do has been a blessing. His support pushed me to take myself and my business seriously, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
