We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Berger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?
Turning Setbacks into Success with Bayou Barkery
When I faced unexpected job loss from my corporate career, I had two choices: dwell on uncertainty or take a leap of faith. I chose the latter. Instead of letting fear define my future, I embraced my passion for animals and turned it into something meaningful—Bayou Barkery.
It all started with my own pets, Juniper, Zeke, and Sadie. They struggled with food sensitivities and digestive issues, and I was determined to find a healthier alternative. I began researching natural pet nutrition, experimenting with wholesome ingredients, and crafting food and treats that would be both delicious and beneficial. What started as a personal mission quickly evolved into a business that prioritizes pet health and happiness.
Bayou Barkery isn’t just a brand—it’s a testament to resilience. Losing my job was daunting, but it ultimately led me to something more fulfilling. Today, I take pride in creating organic, natural raw pet food and treats that help pets thrive while inspiring others to turn challenges into opportunities.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Bayou Barkery was born from my love for animals and my commitment to providing them with the healthiest treats possible. My journey started with my own pets and I wanted to create something better for them, and soon, I realized I could do the same for pet lovers everywhere.
At Bayou Barkery, we focus on crafting organic, all-natural pet treats that not only taste great but also support pet health. Each product is made with high-quality ingredients, free from fillers and artificial additives. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to providing pets with nutrient-rich raw food options. Our raw food line is designed to support optimal pet wellness by offering wholesome, species-appropriate meals.
We’ve grown so much over the past year, and we’re thrilled about what’s ahead. Right now, we’re expanding our product line to include seasonal treats and specialized dietary options, ensuring that every pet can enjoy something tailored to their needs. We’re also excited to announce the launch of our Freeze-Dried Organ Meat Treats, offering a nutrient-dense, protein-rich snack for pets who thrive on high-quality, natural ingredients.
You can find us at Tomball Farmers Market and other local markets, where we love connecting with our community and sharing our handcrafted treats and raw food selections. Even more exciting, we’ve officially entered our first retail store—Twisted T Farm Store in Willis! Now, pet owners in the area can find a specially curated selection of our treats and raw food right in Willis.
Bayou Barkery represents resilience, passion, and purpose. It’s not just about making pet treats—it’s about creating something meaningful, building a brand that pet owners trust, and turning challenges into opportunities. I’m grateful for every step of this journey and excited about what’s next. Stay tuned—because we are working on some exciting things in the future!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities had the greatest impact on my journey: resilience, creativity, and a willingness to learn.
– Resilience: When I faced my job loss, I could have let fear hold me back, but instead, I embraced the unknown. Challenges are inevitable, especially in entrepreneurship, but pushing forward despite setbacks is key to growth. My advice? Trust yourself. Take small steps toward your vision, even when the path isn’t clear. Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you, and most importantly, keep going.
– Creativity: Bayou Barkery was built on the idea that pet food & treats could be healthier and more exciting. From experimenting with recipes to designing branding, creativity fueled every step. If you’re early in your journey, give yourself space to explore ideas freely. Innovation doesn’t come from perfection—it comes from experimenting, making mistakes, and refining along the way.
– A Willingness to Learn: I never expected to be running a pet business, but I embraced the learning process. Whether it was researching pet nutrition, understanding business operations, or marketing my products, I remained open to growth. My advice? Be curious. Read, take courses, ask questions, and connect with mentors in your field. Every bit of knowledge builds confidence and propels you forward.
Starting something new can feel overwhelming, but every step you take matters. Trust the process, stay adaptable, and believe in your vision—you’re capable of more than you know!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
