Meet Jessica Gabrielle

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Gabrielle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica , thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
I overcame writers block by just not forcing the music. I create music from real life situations or what someone may be going through and ill use it to my advantage to speak for someone who can’t for themselves at the time. As for me, it gets frustrating when I can’t find the words or a beat that fits. Then I have to remember to take my time, live life a little so that I can complete the story I’m trying to tell. Often I find if I’m in a space, I’ll go do something else with my time until the words find me. 9/10 that works for me, when I don’t force it. It’s more natural and meaningful .

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
For starters I am a devoted Mom. My daughter truly makes life special she’s my rainbow baby. Outside of Being a Mom and a Singer, I am also a Pre-k Teacher which is always rewarding, being apart of their growth. My kids are always asking me to sing Birthday songs just to make them feel super special, and or asking me how to properly form a song of their own. It’s nice that I can encourage the Youth with their talents. Singing/dancing however is my passion. Growing up I took African, Ballet, Jazz , Tap and even Hip-hop classes which always seemed to stay with me. In High School overseas, I had the opportunity to hold my own dance team that was pretty successful for a 16/17 year old at the time. I held flash mobs for the military sailors where we would appear anywhere and break out in dance. It was nice but I learned how to organize a business early on. From that moment on I knew I was destined to be in the Entertainment business, it was just how ? Even today, I try to balance my job , being a Mom and also doing what makes me happy but its a challenge because I want to excel in everything I do. I just released my 2nd EP called “Wishful Thinking2” which took me 6 months to put together, the right way at least. My sound and lyrics improved and my audience was happy with the results so that makes it easier for me to keep going. Not only for myself but for others. I plan to keep up with my dancing , and finding new ways to expand my music. The goal is to be heard !! That’s what I intend to do. I look forward to new music and working with more Artist this year especially in South Carolina. We’re so talented and not seen enough.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My ambition, confidence, and determination. I take advice from people yes, however to stay true to myself is most important to me. My best advice is to love yourself first. Find what makes you happy that you would not mind doing everyday. Figure out what you’re good at and run with it !!! Also social media will have you thinking you’re not good enough. YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT YOURSELF ! We don’t have these talents for nothing..

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My mom sacrificed her own dreams to take care of my brother and I. My Father served 30 years in the US NAVY and they have both been a super positive impact on me. My mom gave me the courage and dad gave me the hustle . They both gave me the opportunity to travel across seas to see the world before age 21. A lot of people cant say that they have done that. I went to school with Italians and Arabs.. just being exposed to multi-cultures was a blessing in itself. That allowed me to be able to walk in any room today with confidence no matter what race.
