Meet Jessica Grier

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Grier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.

Jessica, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
As a typical African-American girl growing up, I was under the impression that I had a responsibility to become successful and represent my race well at all cost. I pursued that limited definition of success for quite some time and was content with it for quite some time. It wasn’t until my faith became more prevalent as an adult that I realized the picture I had painted was skewed and unfinished. The more I studied God’s Word and embraced it as truth, the more I found purpose in him and became encouraged to be a light in the world at all cost.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I work day to day as a Middle School Counselor. This has given me the ability to continue to sharpen my mental health counseling skills and affords me the time in the evenings to work as a coach in my business- Higher Ground Consulting. I am keenly aware of the mental health needs in communities and I embrace a wholistic approach to achieve a balanced well-being. I encourage Believers to embrace the Word of God and apply it to every area of their lives to achieve true wellness- physically, financially, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, occupationally, socially, intellectually, and environmentally.

I am the author of 2 books, a 365-day devotional titled “Getting On Higher Ground”and an e-book titled “Releasing Religion/ How to Become a Better Christian”.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The best quality you can have is being authentically you. It will save you peace at the end of every day and it is something you have to fight for. You will fail trying to be like others, so figure out who you are and what you want and stick with that.

Getting comfortable with technology skills was always something that benefitted me. I may have resisted it at first but once I tackled it, it became an asset.

Having knowledge in the Bible really helped me grow personally and otherwise so when I’m speaking to people, I had the confidence I needed to say without

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. If you spend time focusing on your weak areas, you won’t blossom and mature in your strengths. My advice is to use your strengths to make the money that can pay for someone else to help you in your weak areas. The only weak spots that you should focus on are those that impact your personal character and wellbeing. For example, if you’re a bad communicator, you probably should get a coach or counselor who can help you grow to a basic level before it impacts your marriage or other relationships.
