Meet Jessica Hilts

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Hilts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Jessica, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

I grew up watching my mother struggle to provide for us like she wanted to. She worked so hard to make sure we were taken care of and always worked so hard. We received help from many people and as an adult, when I am able to give back to someone in need, I will. Because when my family was in need, others were generous to us. I lost my mother 10 years ago, today. (1/14/15) she couldn’t give back like she wanted to, so in her honor, I give back when I am able.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am an event floral designer. My main work is weddings, which bring me so much fulfillment. Being able to be a part of the day a couple vows their forever to each other, is an amazing feeling!
My love of flowers began as a child, while spending time working in my mom’s flower beds. She taught me about flowers and growing and maintenance. It brought her so much joy. To watch her flowers bloom was what she looked forward to the most. She is with me in all of the work I do and will remain there. I owe my love of flowers and making people smile with them, to her. May she rest in peace. My main floral company is Petal Post Events, which began as a brick and mortar everyday flower shop. Very early on I was approached about a bridal bouquet and boutonniere. I hadn’t done bridal florals yet. I fell in love with the bouquet and sought out to learn my technique and style. Before long I moved to my home studio and stopped doing retail. I put all of my focus into large events and weddings and have consistently booked 30 weddings a season for the last 5 years. That’s pretty good for a one woman show. I have met many amazing vendors along the way that will help when able. I am very lucky for the network that I have.
I recently created my floral design brand, Poppy & Lotus Floral Design Co. which has been slow moving. My focus with that brand is in luxury weddings. I’d love to travel the world installing luxury florals!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The season of each flower and availability. The proper care and preparation of the flowers. The most impactful on my journey would be the loss of my mother and wanting to pursue a career that I would love.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I would love to collaborate with wedding planners and other florists in luxury floral design. Happy to freelance as well!
