Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Hunter . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
It took for me to realize that everyone isn’t going to be around forever. I had to learn how to be an adult by myself. I’ve always had someone to watch over me, or the things I do whether it be walking to the store, or a medical issue. Having epilepsy helped me develop my confidence and self-esteem, because it pushed me to realize the world for what it was. It pushed me to go out and experience a lot of things on my own, such as telling my story and how I continue to live “disabled,” yet not incapable. I had to live on my own to experience the whole disability as if there was no one there, that way I would already be used and accustomed to the ways of living
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I was diagnosed with Epilepsy at 19, at the time, I didn’t understand it or anything that came along with it. I fell into a depression because I was questioning how and why this happened to me at that age. Once I started to understand more about Epilepsy, I began to go exploring starting with people who had the same, or similar issue. I then took those people who became friends and started sharing our story around, posting pictures with similar medications, and fun things that epileptic people can do. I figured it’s time to take it up a notch, why not use my webpage to spread more awareness? I realized that people depended on my next move in order for them to be just as motivated as I am. I started as a nonprofit organization because I didn’t want any repayment for doing something I felt should be done. I started working with the youth, joined other clubs, and then took my business further. I then started professionally taking payments after blogging for DJs, artists, and daily events. I’ve worked with some people I didn’t think I would be able to say I stood next to, graduated college with my “Associate of Arts Business Administration”, and am currently in for my Bachelor’s. I now make music and attend events whether it be for the community, or youth, with a helping hand, If I can do it, with medication and all, you can do anything you put your mind to, and that’s my passion!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The fact that I am able to remain professional, independent, and determined means a lot. As a business owner, it’s all about professionalism, having epilepsy can cause some issues within the brain and or speech. Given the type of Epilepsy I have, I was told that my memory would be affected, which it is. The kicker is writing things down, constantly taking notes, and having things in front of my face that I know I need to do. Now because it has been a repetition for years, I am able to do these things without having to take many notes, I am able to live on my own with the knowledge of what to do just before and after a seizure. The best advice given would be exactly what I was told myself, “If you see a vision, don’t clarify it with anyone, make it happen. There is always going to be that one person who is watching, that will turn it into a million.”
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
In the words of the rapper Snoop Dogg himself, “I wanna thank me. I wanna thank me for believing in me. I wanna thank me for doing all this hard work, I wanna thank me for having no days off. I wanna thank me for, for never quitting. I wanna thank me for always being a giver, and tryna give more than I receive. I wanna thank me for tryna do more right than wrong I wanna thank me for just being me at all times. Jessica Hunter, you go girl!”
