Meet Jessica Jones

We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?

From my earliest memories, I was drawn to understanding others’ hidden pain. I vividly remember studying my great aunt during her visits to our Delaware home. Though she filled our house with smiles and laughter, I sensed an underlying sadness in her that touched my young heart. I felt an inexplicable urge to stay close to her, to embrace her, believing somehow that my presence could lift her spirits.

As I grew older, this innate sensitivity evolved into a fierce advocate’s spirit. Injustice and inequality began to strike deep chords within me, particularly as I watched beloved family members navigate the complexities of chronic illness. I found myself naturally stepping into their shoes, listening intently to their stories, and truly absorbing the weight of their experiences. These intimate moments of understanding shaped my perspective on healthcare and ignited a passion to create change.

Now, as a breast cancer research nurse, my empathy has found its truest purpose. Every day, I witness extraordinary women fighting for their lives with unwavering determination. In their struggles, I see reflections of universal human desires – to be truly seen, heard, and understood. Too often, I’ve watched as unique individuals are reduced to standard protocols, their personal concerns dismissed or overlooked, especially within communities of color.

These profound experiences haven’t just deepened my empathy; they’ve transformed it into a calling. I’m driven to rewrite the narrative of how people, particularly in communities of color, experience healthcare. Every patient deserves to be treated not just as another case, but as a unique individual with their own story, fears, and hopes. This is the change I’m committed to creating, one patient at a time.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As a breast cancer research nurse, I inhabit a unique space where science meets humanity. Every day, I walk alongside individuals facing different stages of their breast cancer journey – from those newly diagnosed, to those carrying genetic predispositions, to warriors battling metastatic disease. But my role extends far beyond clinical duties; I’m a beacon of hope, a bridge between complex medical science and the very human experience of facing cancer.

In the research world, I’ve witnessed firsthand how clinical trials can offer new possibilities, yet I’ve also seen the hesitation in patients’ eyes when the word “trial” is mentioned. This observation sparked something profound within me – a calling to create Starting Point Pathways, a nonprofit born from seven years of experience and a deep understanding of the gaps between medical knowledge and patient comprehension.

Starting Point Pathways emerged from a simple yet powerful belief: every person facing a serious health challenge deserves to understand their condition and options fully. We’re not just sharing information; we’re empowering lives. Drawing from years of connecting people to clinical trials in academic settings, we bridge the crucial gap between complex medical knowledge and patient understanding, particularly for those with limited resources.

What truly sets my heart alight is the personal connection with each individual I serve. Beyond their diagnosis, I’ve had the privilege of discovering their stories, their dreams, and their incredible resilience. These interactions have taught me profound lessons about the power of advocacy, the importance of living in the present, and the unbreakable human spirit.

Our mission extends beyond just breast cancer support – we’re actively working to diversify clinical trial participation, particularly within communities of color. Through navigation services, educational resources, and our monthly newsletter highlighting research opportunities, we’re making clinical trials more accessible and understood.

Whether I’m moderating expert panels, facilitating social media sessions on clinical trial navigation, or providing personalized consultation to newly diagnosed patients, each interaction reinforces our commitment to comprehensive care. We address not just the physical aspects of illness, but embrace the whole person – their emotional, social, and mental well-being.

This journey has shown me that while a cancer diagnosis may be part of someone’s story, it never defines their entire narrative. Through Starting Point Pathways, we’re creating a future where health literacy is universal, where every patient feels empowered to make informed decisions, and where the path through healthcare challenges becomes a little less daunting and a lot more hopeful.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

When I reflect on my journey, three essential qualities stand out as the cornerstone of my growth and impact. First is resilience – that unwavering ability to bounce back from setbacks and view challenges as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. In healthcare and nonprofit work, where the path isn’t always clear and success isn’t guaranteed, resilience has been my anchor. It’s what keeps me going when I see patients struggling or when initiatives face unexpected hurdles.

Second is determination, which I’ve learned is different from mere persistence. It’s that fire inside that transforms “I should” into “I must.” This quality has been crucial in building Starting Point Pathways from the ground up, especially when faced with the complex task of bridging the gap between clinical trials and underserved communities. Determination is what pushes me to keep advocating, keep educating, and keep seeking better ways to serve our community.

The third, and perhaps most transformative, has been embracing my uniqueness. In a field where traditional approaches often prevail, learning to trust my distinct perspective and experiences has been invaluable. This authenticity has allowed me to connect more deeply with patients and create innovative solutions that might not have emerged from a more conventional approach.

For those early in their journey, here’s my heartfelt advice: Stay deeply connected to your mission, but be flexible in how you achieve it. When challenges arise – and they will – see them as opportunities to innovate and grow rather than as obstacles. Most importantly, never lose sight of what ignited your passion in the first place. That initial spark, that moment when you realized you had to make a difference – that’s your compass in difficult times.

Remember, these qualities aren’t innate gifts but muscles that strengthen with use. Every setback you face, every moment of doubt you push through, every unique idea you dare to voice – these are all opportunities to build these crucial characteristics. Your journey is uniquely yours, and that’s exactly what makes it valuable.

The path to making a difference isn’t always straight or smooth, but maintaining these three qualities will help ensure it’s meaningful and impactful. Your authentic voice and distinctive approach are needed in whatever field you choose to pursue.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

In 2024, my biggest area of growth came through an unexpected challenge: rebranding my non-profit. Prior to the name change, I was riding a wave of momentum, making significant strides in our work. When I suddenly had to change our name, it felt like hitting a reset button. Everything I’d built seemed to pause.

But instead of seeing this as a setback, I chose to view it as an opportunity for deep reflection. I took the time to truly rediscover my organization’s voice and clarify our mission. This wasn’t just about selecting a new name—it was about diving deep into our core purpose and what we wanted to achieve.

The process was both humbling and energizing. Having to start almost from scratch could have been discouraging, but it actually fueled my passion even more. I used this moment to reassess our goals, realign our strategies, and emerge with a clearer, more focused vision.

What started as a potential roadblock became a transformative experience. I learned that our resilience isn’t measured by uninterrupted success, but by how we navigate and grow through challenges. This rebranding taught me that sometimes, pausing allows us to move forward with greater intention and purpose.
