Meet Jessica La

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica La. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Jessica, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Much of my resilience comes from my passion for art and faith. Growing up as a first generation Asian American, my career path was not a preferable choice. But at a very young age, I strongly felt that I had a gift in the arts and needed to pursue it. I was discouraged by many and endured a lot of self doubt. However, isn’t it worth fighting for what you’re passionate about? Otherwise, what’s the point? My passion and faith still continues to drive my resilience.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Jessica La is a motion designer, illustrator, and animator, born and raised in sunny California but now resides in the misty trees of Portland, Oregon. Her work is inspired by the simple pleasures of life and love of children’s books, nature, ceramics, TV, and films! She primarily works digitally but enjoys playing with traditional mediums like paint, color pencils, and ink. After graduating from Otis College of Art and Design, she has collaborated with folks at Snap Inc., Meta, Apple, Netflix, Audible, Little Tikes and more! Along with motion graphics, she wishes to dive into the world of children’s books after illustrating her first picture book: Because of Who I Am… written by Vivian Lee Mun.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As fellow artists know, we always have room to grow. It’s important to practice using our tools and keep creating! As well as building relationships and connecting with others who are passionate about the same thing. It keeps me motivated and inspired! But also, having hobbies outside of work and finding other passions has helped balance me.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I firmly believe in having one day of the week be a day of complete rest. No work, no chores, no to do lists. Just simply delighting in what I have, who I have around me, and enjoying life.
