Meet Jessica Leigh

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Leigh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica Leigh below.

Jessica Leigh, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?

Self discipline is a way to express self love. I think I realized at a young age that no one is coming to save you, no one is coming to do the work for you to get you to where you want to go. It’s a mindset that you need to have. Once you feel that shift in your mind everything changes. Motivation won’t always be present, that’s where self discipline comes into action. I think I always knew that if I wasn’t going to be the one to push myself daily then I was not going to accomplish my goals and have the life that I always wanted. Boxing really taught me a lot of self discipline, they say it’s the loneliest sport in the world. It’s a lot of training, doing the same thing everyday, constant reps, all while seeing no progress right away but knowing that there is a bigger picture as to why you continue to show up. I believe that applies to a lot of areas of life. It’s about the journey, not the destination.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m lucky enough to call what I do “work”. A huge goal of mine was to love what I do everyday. I am a full time group fitness coach and personal trainer. My classes at Rumble Boxing NYC are half strength and half boxing inspired. A huge part of my everyday work is training personal clients and building my own brand. If there’s one thing I want my personal brand to surround it’s self betterment. I remember what this sport did for me, it helped me through so many dark periods of my life. My mission is to give that feeling back to my clients. If I’m apart of someones journey at any capacity to become better then I feel like I have fulfilled my purpose.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back over the past 4 years of my professional career in fitness I would highlight the qualities of grit, hustle & patience. I got hired at Rumble Boxing NYC at the age of 21 years old – I wish I could go back and tell myself that I had so much time to learn and SO much to actually learn about the industry and building my community. Be accepting of feedback from other coaches that want to help you. Surround yourself with THE BEST. My biggest piece of advice is to never stop being a student, every great coach has a coach. Continue to gain knowledge in your field and continue to better yourself the way your clients deserve.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Being open about mental health struggles is a big part of my social media presence. I might not have a huge following but anytime I open up about my struggles – I get flooded with DM’s of people thanking me for my vulnerability and it opens the door to beautiful uplifting conversations. I think everyone just wants to feel understood at the end of the day. Something I always say in my class is that you’re never alone – even when you feel you’re at your lowest, you are never alone. In order to overcome the struggles I face daily with mental health I continue to show up. If I had one piece of advice it’s to just keep moving, the worst thing to do is to sit in it for too long. Movement heals, showing up and committing to healthier habits heals, choosing yourself heals. Some days feel harder than others but every day is a new opportunity to become a little bit better.
