We were lucky to catch up with Jessica-lynn Veley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica-Lynn, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience as a fashion designer comes from my deep passion for design and creativity is at the core of everything I do. I’ve always had an unwavering desire to express my ideas through fashion, and that drive helps me push through difficult times.
The challenges and obstacles I’ve faced throughout my career have only pushed me to further evolve and change. Each setback, whether it’s a missed opportunity or a project that didn’t go as planned, has taught me invaluable lessons. I see these experiences as stepping stones that allow me to improve and refine my craft.
Additionally, I find strength in the support system around me—whether it’s mentors, peers, or the feedback I receive from clients and customers. Their encouragement reminds me of why I do what I do and gives me the confidence to keep moving forward.
Being able to constantly evolve and adapt to the fast-paced nature of the fashion industry is a key factor. I embrace change and finding innovative solutions to problems, which helps me remain motivated even when facing uncertainty.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the designer and entire team behind JLV The Label which is a forward-thinking fashion brand that marries modern aesthetics with ethical practices. Although I originally focused on lingerie, the brand is now expanding into knitwear and crochet garments, offering a broader range of meticulously crafted pieces. Each garment is handmade in Canada, ensuring a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that reflects the brand’s commitment to sustainability and ethical production.
At the heart of JLV The Label is a dedication to creating clothing that empowers women. My brand takes inspiration from global fashion trends but makes a conscious effort to design pieces that transcend the standard size ranges typically found in the fashion industry. By embracing body diversity, JLV ensures that its collections are accessible and flattering to a wide array of shapes and sizes, promoting inclusivity and confidence. The designs are not only about style but about creating a sense of empowerment, allowing women to feel comfortable, beautiful, and strong in their own skin.
JLV The Label also aims to redefine femininity, offering garments that celebrate both strength and grace. Whether it’s the delicate lace of lingerie or the cozy, intricate textures of knitwear, each piece is carefully designed to enhance the wearer’s sense of self. With an emphasis on sustainability, JLV makes a statement that fashion can be both luxurious and responsible, offering women a chance to look good, feel good, and make a positive impact on the world around them.
I am striving to build a community of women who embrace empowerment, individuality, and ethical fashion, contributing to a more inclusive and conscientious industry.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I find that fostering creativity, developing technical skills, and understanding the business side of fashion are essential for those looking to build a successful career in design.
For those just starting out, my advice is to stay dedicated, continually improve your craft, and remember that success is a combination of talent, hard work, and the ability to adapt in a rapidly changing industry.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
As a Canadian fashion designer, we face challenges such as limited market size, high production costs, and access to funding. Other issues that affect this would be seasons / weather dependant clothing lines, profitablity and even the ability to network with professionals in the same industries.
