Meet Jessica Mckiverkin

We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Mckiverkin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

As a Realtor®️, my resilience stems from several key sources. First and foremost, my early experiences taught me the value of perseverance. Growing up, I faced various challenges that required me to adapt and stay focused on my goals. These experiences built a foundation of mental toughness and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Additionally, my passion for helping clients find their dream homes drives my resilience. The real estate industry can be demanding, with its ups and downs, but knowing that I play a crucial role in one of the most significant decisions of my clients’ lives keeps me motivated. Each successful transaction reinforces my belief in the importance of resilience in achieving positive outcomes.
Moreover, Coldwell Banker Realty’s supportive environment has been instrumental in fostering my resilience. The company’s emphasis on continuous learning and professional development has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of the real estate market effectively. The camaraderie and encouragement from my colleagues also provide a strong support system, enabling me to bounce back from setbacks and stay committed to my clients’ needs.
Ultimately, my resilience is a combination of personal experiences, passion for my work, and the supportive culture at Coldwell Banker Realty. This blend of factors enables me to face challenges head-on and consistently deliver exceptional service to my clients.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back on my journey, I believe the following three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge have been the most impactful:
Adaptability:
Why It’s Important: In real estate, interior design, and professional organizing, the landscape is constantly changing. Market trends, client preferences, and industry standards evolve rapidly. Adaptability allows you to stay relevant and respond effectively to new challenges and opportunities.
Advice: Embrace change and continuously seek out new learning opportunities. Attend industry conferences, take online courses, and stay up-to-date with the latest trends. Flexibility and an open mind will enable you to thrive in any situation.
Strong Communication Skills:
Why It’s Important: Building relationships and understanding client needs are at the heart of my work. Whether it’s negotiating a real estate deal, discussing design concepts, or organizing a client’s space, clear and effective communication is crucial for success.
Advice: Practice active listening and empathy. Take the time to truly understand your clients’ needs and concerns. Additionally, hone your verbal and written communication skills through workshops, public speaking engagements, and feedback from peers.
Project Management:
Why It’s Important: Juggling multiple roles and responsibilities requires excellent project management skills. From coordinating property listings to overseeing design projects and organizing clients’ spaces, being able to manage tasks efficiently ensures that everything runs smoothly and deadlines are met.
Advice: Invest in project management tools and techniques. Utilize software like Trello, Asana, or Microsoft Project to stay organized and keep track of tasks. Develop strong time management habits and prioritize tasks based on their importance and deadlines.
For those early in their journey:
Be Curious and Eager to Learn: Never stop learning. The more knowledge and skills you acquire, the better equipped you’ll be to handle diverse situations.
Network and Build Relationships: Surround yourself with mentors and peers who can offer guidance and support. Networking is invaluable for gaining insights and opportunities.
Stay Resilient: Challenges and setbacks are part of any journey. Stay resilient, maintain a positive attitude, and keep pushing forward even when things get tough.
By focusing on these qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge, you’ll be well on your way to achieving success in your chosen field.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I use a few key strategies to manage stress:
Prioritize Tasks: Break down tasks into smaller steps and focus on what’s most important first.
Time Management: Schedule tasks and set realistic deadlines. Use tools like calendars and digital apps.
Take Breaks: Short breaks help clear the mind and recharge. A quick walk or a few minutes of stretching can make a big difference.
Stay Organized: Keep your workspace tidy and use organizational tools to maintain order.
Seek Support: Reach out to colleagues, mentors, or friends for advice and support.
Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate deep breathing, meditation, or journaling into your daily routine.
Advice for Others:
Set Realistic Goals: Break goals into achievable milestones and celebrate small victories.
Learn to Say No: Recognize your limits and don’t take on more than you can handle.
Stay Flexible: Adapt to changes as needed and adjust your plans accordingly.
By prioritizing tasks, managing time effectively, taking breaks, and seeking support, you can navigate challenges more smoothly and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
