Meet Jessica Meades

We recently connected with Jessica Meades and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

You know, that’s an interesting question. You see, for as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to make sick people better. I dreamed of being a doctor when I was a little girl. I chose classes in high school and college that would prepare me for the rigors of medical school. I was absolutely devastated when I wasn’t admitted. At that point my life took an abrupt left turn. Looking back on it now, I’m so grateful, though at the time I was heartbroken. I went on to work in the laboratory at our local hospital. However, after the birth of our daughter, I left even that behind. Through a dear friend, I was introduced to the natural health world. I was so amazed at how much better I felt after using nothing but plants for whatever issue I was experiencing. I found I had a hunger to learn more, so I attended every training I could find. I became more and more fascinated with what I was learning and quickly found myself turning to natural solutions for both myself and my family. Several years later, I had 2 different people in 2 different places tell me within the same week that I would make a wonderful naturopath. I was intrigued and decided to do a bit of research into that idea. A friend pointed me to Trinity School of Natural Health. This ended up being just what I needed! A place where I could learn from home while taking care of our small children. I worked hard to become a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and then to open Chrysalis Natural Health so that I could truly help sick people be well. So, in a sense I’ve known my purpose since I was very young; however it took me many years, detours, and some heartache to see the fulfillment of that purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a Holistic Health Practitioner and I have the privilege of helping sick people become well. My job is so fun. I’m part detective, part teacher, and part best friend all rolled into one professional package.

Let me dive a bit deeper into the super fun description of what I do for those of you who are curious. As a Holistic Health Practitioner I look at people as a whole. Unlike a physician who has specialized in one area of the body, like the heart or the kidneys, my focus is on how every system affects every other system. So if someone comes to me complaining of joint pain I’m taking into consideration things like their circulatory system, their digestive system, their eating habits, and even their emotional state in order to get a full picture of how the body is doing. I ask detailed questions, as well as observing things like patterns in their irises, nails, and faces. All of these things together help me narrow down which systems are out of whack and causing the discomfort or sickness that my client is experiencing. Then I work to figure out how to get those systems rebalanced so that the body can actually heal. Did you realize that the human body is amazing? The only thing that can truly heal it is itself. Once the body’s healing work is completed, the symptoms disappear. So figuring out what is going on takes some detective work.

Once the detective part is figured out, then I get to put on my teacher hat. Personally, I’m not fond of someone just telling me what to do. I like to know the reasons behind things, and if the reason is compelling enough I’ll do what is being asked of me. So I treat my clients the same way. I explain to them WHY I’m making certain recommendations so that they’ll understand how important it is for their health. I want them to feel better and part of my job is pinpointing what the body needs so that it can work on healing itself which leads to feeling better.

As a Practitioner, there are times I will need to ask some probing questions in order to get a full picture of what is going on. That’s where the friend part of my job comes in. Everything I am told is kept in the strictest of confidence and I aim to work with my clients when it comes to my recommendations. If for some reason, a client is uncomfortable with or unable to comply with a certain recommendation, I will gladly work with them to find something that will work better for them. For instance, if I have a client that doesn’t want to use a certain brand of essential oils we can find something that will work in their preferred brand. Or if there’s someone who doesn’t believe in using homeopathic remedies, crystals, or certain herbs we’ll find something that works for them to bring their body back into alignment. This is why I give the description of part best friend. My clients need to feel comfortable enough to confide in me and trust me to work with them instead of seeing me as some kind of health dictator telling them what to do.

Personally, one of my favorite aspects of the job is the teaching aspect. I adore sharing what I’ve learned with others and watching them apply that knowledge to their own lives! I get to do this not only with individual clients, but also in groups. Just this year I have introduced a group health class, The Get Healthier Challenge, to teach people the basic foundations of what the body needs in order to experience health. Just like a car won’t run without gas in the tank and oil to lubricate the engine, there are certain basic things the body needs in order to function properly. So I’ve put together a six week course to both teach those foundational needs and give my students time to start forming those healthy habits that they need to enjoy better health. I’ve gotten back wonderful reviews from students who have taken the course, and I’ve already been asked about dates for next year. I’ll be setting those dates soon, so be sure to check the website and our Facebook page for when those will be. In fact, due to the positive response I am currently working on releasing a second group class called Detox Your Life. Toxin buildup affects us all, so learning ways to remove toxins from your home and body is incredibly beneficial to your health and healing. This class will be available in 2026.

I love that I can work with clients anywhere. The beauty of the internet and modern connectivity means that I am able to both work from my home office and meet with clients wherever they happen to be. While I also enjoy making house calls in my local area, I enjoy the ability to meet clients from all over as well.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

This is such a good question! How about I give a bit of advice to go with each area of knowledge that was impactful for me.

First piece of advice: hold on to your plans lightly. What do I mean by that? When I was younger, I was just SO SURE I knew exactly where my dreams would take me. I was medical school bound, come what may. However, life threw me a curve ball. When I didn’t get into medical school I lost sight of my dream. For many years I thought helping sick people just meant running accurate tests in the laboratory. While I am grateful for that time, it didn’t really fulfill my dream of making sick people well, though I had convinced myself that it was ok. My dream was just that, a dream. I was still helping sick people. Later on I saw how God was directing my steps into an unexpected path. Now I can easily look back and say, “Ah, I see what you did there, God!” He knew what He was doing the whole time. Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies. Things didn’t work out the way I had planned or imagined they would, but I was able to keep an open mind and stay flexible. This eventually led me to where I am today.

Second piece of advice: success takes perseverance. Don’t quit just because something becomes hard or seems to be taking too long. Someone once told me that it takes about 10 years to become an “overnight” success. That has stuck with me. It’s often something I have to remind myself of when business gets slow or my schedule becomes so hectic I wish there were more hours in the day. Find yourself someone who helps you stay both focused and encouraged, be that a partner, teacher, friend, or mentor. Turn to that person on those days when you just want to quit and let them remind you of why you really want to stick with it.

Third piece of advice: turn to prayer first. There are so many times when we treat God and prayer as a last resort. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we have to have all the answers and be all the things, especially when you’re starting your own business. Let me tell you, that is a recipe for overwhelm and burnout. Trust me, I’ve been there and you don’t want to follow. Instead of trying to carry the weight of every decision and outcome on your own shoulders, share the burden! Pray over the decisions, large and small. If you like to write, keep a journal. Record your requests, worries, and successes. Be specific. Write down dates. Then write down when the answers you’ve been searching for come to you. Make prayer more than just a habit, make it a lifestyle. You’re not just saying words by rote, but having a conversation with the Creator of the Universe. It’s ok if sometimes you need to yell, shout, or cry from sheer frustration. He understands exactly where you’re coming from. When I remember to pray first I find that both my business and I do much better.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I know overwhelm is something we all struggle with at times. Lately I have found the most effective strategy for dealing with overwhelm to be the practice of grounding. If you’re not familiar with it, this is a simple practice of just going outside and placing your bare feet on the earth. I know, it sounds super simple so how can it possibly help? To answer that I’ll need to chat a little bit about frequency. Frequency is the rate at which things vibrate.

All matter vibrates. Different substances vibrate at different rates, or frequencies. When we are stuck in a negative emotional headspace our body’s frequency is affected in a negative way. By removing any impediment between us and the ground, we allow the frequency of the earth to help reset our own. The benefits I’ve noticed most from this practice include a calming of my emotions, a broader perspective on my situation, and an opportunity to just stop and breathe while I think about things for a time. Many times I’ll bring my journal with me as I hash out whatever issues have me feeling overwhelmed.

I have also used essential oils, my favorite being a blend called Stress Away, to help me take that mental step back when I’ve felt overwhelmed. There’s something about the ability to mentally take that step back that helps me see things in a different light. Many times I just need to narrow my focus to one thing at a time instead of trying to look at everything that needs to be done all at once. Everything feels big, scary, and impossible. One thing feels manageable. There are also times when I step back for a moment that I can see that I need to let some things go, or delegate them to others so that I can focus on the things that only I can do. At the end of the day, knowing that I cannot do all the things all the time and taking that burden off of myself really helps.
