Meet Jessica Qinyue Luo

We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Qinyue Luo recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica Qinyue, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I’m Jessica Qinyue Luo, a Chinese award-winning female director and producer, currently in the final stages of completing my MFA in directing at Loyola Marymount University. At the heart of my artistic journey lies a deep commitment to storytelling, manifested through my roles as both a director and producer of short films/commercials/music videos. Through my work, I strive to weave together raw emotions and complex human experiences into compelling visual tales that resonate with audiences on a profound level. To answer the question, I concluded it into three key points.

1. Emotional Sensitivity: My creative process revolves around delving into the intricacies of humanity and social trends. I maintain a keen sensitivity to different human emotions, drawing inspiration from both my own experiences and observations of those around me. This includes being attuned to prevailing social ideas and sentiments, allowing me to create work that resonates deeply with audiences.

2. Reflection: I am a firm believer in the power of reflection. I find value in dissecting every aspect of life, whether it’s work-related challenges or the everyday joys and conflicts. By delving into the essence of significant events, I gain valuable insights that fuel my creative endeavors and enrich the narratives I craft.

3. Team Collaboration: As a leader, I prioritize fostering a culture of respect and love within my team. I recognize that creativity thrives in an environment where every team member feels valued and supported. By nurturing strong relationships with my team members, I create a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere that fuels innovation and enhances the creative process.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My journey in storytelling began in China, where I navigated complex family dynamics, raised by my grandparents and relatives due to circumstances preventing my parents from caring for me. This early exposure to adult emotions laid the groundwork for my storytelling passion.

Movies and TV dramas became my refuge, providing catharsis and a voice for my unexpressed feelings. Inspired by the character’s emotions, I pursued a degree in Film Production at Penn State University, honing my skills in capturing the human essence on screen.

In 2020, I ventured into advertising with ACCENT Productions in Shenzhen, broadening my narrative understanding and reinforcing my commitment to resonant storytelling. Now based in Los Angeles, I’m not just an observer but a director and producer, infusing my experiences into every project.

My work is a dedication to exploring raw emotions and complex human experiences, influenced by my background in sociology and balanced feminism. My latest directorial works include two short films “Underwater Blue” (2024) and “Ornamental Oriental” (2024), and a music video “Halfway To You” (2024).

With a bicultural upbringing, I blend Eastern sensibilities with Western techniques, aiming to create narratives that resonate globally. Each project reflects a piece of my essence, seeking to touch hearts, provoke thought, and inspire change.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Empathy: Being able to immerse myself in the perspectives of diverse characters and real-life individuals has been crucial for drawing inspiration and creating authentic portrayals. Maintaining a non-judgmental mindset allows me to understand the motivations behind every human action, enriching my storytelling and fostering empathy within my work.

2. Resilience: Filmmaking is a laborious yet gratifying process, often requiring enduring physical and mental challenges. The ability to persevere through the hardships of production is essential for achieving the ultimate satisfaction and rewards. Learning to navigate the trials and tribulations of the journey is the true test of resilience for any filmmaker.

3. Continuous Learning & Humility: Embracing a mindset of perpetual learning and humility is paramount in the filmmaking industry. Recognizing that every filmmaker possesses unique talents and insights, I strive to learn from others and remain open to new perspectives. Cultivating humility allows me to grow as an artist and collaborator, fostering a culture of mutual respect and creative exchange within the filmmaking community.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I’m incredibly grateful for the support and guidance I’ve received from my family, school, professors, and mentors throughout my filmmaking journey. Their belief in my abilities has been pivotal in shaping my path.

I want to take a moment to highlight someone who has played a significant role in my life: my best friend, Gracy Wang. We’ve been close since we were 12 years old, and over the past 12 years, Gracy has become like family to me.

During challenging times, Gracy has been a constant source of support and encouragement. Her perspective, shaped by her background in psychology, has been invaluable in our discussions about human behavior and relationships. These conversations have not only deepened our bond but have also enriched my creative process as a filmmaker. Gracy’s friendship means the world to me, and I’m grateful for her unwavering support and insight.
