Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jessica with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic stems from the values instilled in me by my parents. They consistently emphasized the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Through their own actions, they demonstrated the rewards that come with a strong work ethic. From a young age, watching them consistently strive for excellence in their own endeavors inspired me to do the same. Their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my development have been instrumental in shaping my own work ethic. Growing up, my parents’ small business (The FrameSmith) was a constant presence in my life. I remember spending countless hours at their shop, watching them work and learning the trade. I saw the long hours they put in, the sacrifices they made and commitment to excellent customer service. Through all of this I learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and building strong relationships with customers.
Now, having taken over the reins of The FrameSmith, I feel a profound sense of responsibility and gratitude. I strive to honor their legacy by upholding the values they instilled and continuing to provide the same level of quality and service that has built our reputation. While I bring my own perspectives and approaches to the business, I constantly draw upon the wisdom and experience my parents imparted on me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I currently own/manage The FrameSmith. While we are a small, woman-owned business we definitely do BIG things! From photos taken on your phone to rare works of art to textiles and memorabilia we do it all. I love a challenge and we can custom frame just about anything. Our showroom has thousands of options and I pride myself on having one of the largest selections in the metroplex. We also offer creative design advice at no extra charge. What is really special about custom framing is being able to help our clients bring their artistic visions to life and be part of the process of turning those ideas into a one-of-a-kind finished product, regardless if it’s a simple poster or a precious family heirloom. I love creating something that is part of a special memory for a client that they can enjoy for decades to come. And knowing we always put utmost care into completing the job. Seeing a customer’s happy face when they pick up their completed work makes my day!
When not in the shop, I enjoy cycling, music, lifting weights and yoga. Taking my dogs to explore in the woods and escaping to the mountains. As well and spending time with friends and family.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, communication and curiosity.
For those early in their journey to develop patience, curiosity, and communication skills:
– Ask questions to learn and understand
– Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself during challenging times.
– Explore New Things: Step outside your comfort zone and try new hobbies, activities, and experiences.
– Practice Active Listening: Pay close attention to others, ask clarifying questions, and demonstrate empathy.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I wouldn’t say I have an ideal client but decisive is an important characteristic. With so many options it can be overwhelming at times so someone that is able to circle back and make a final choice is crucial. I love all our different clients, it allows me to hone my customer service skills by learning each person’s individual needs and goals for their project.
