Meet Jessica Smith

We recently connected with Jessica Smith and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica , so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?

The permanent makeup industry is constantly changing and evolving. What we once did 8 years ago is almost entirely obsolete and has led me to grow and learn constantly.
In this industry continuing education is paramount to learning new skills and services to offer as well as keeping up with current technology, information and style.
This fast paced industry always has something new and exciting to offer our clients.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

One of the most important services I offer is the 3D areola restoration for breast cancer survivors. It’s the most incredible feeling to give these women that last special piece of the puzzle for them to feel whole again after all they have been through.
I also offer hair restoration for men experiencing losing their hair and women with thinning hair. It is amazing to see the transformation and their happiness grow and self esteem restored.
Alopecia is becoming increasingly prevalent especially amazing younger women and helping them get their confidence back with a new set of eyebrows is also an amazing thing to see.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Like i said earlier continuing education is incredibly important in this industry.
My clients are entrusting me to know what I’m doing and proficient at giving them the perfect look they are wanting.
The greatest impact on my journey is listening to my peers and learning from each other.
My advice to someone coming into the industry would be don’t skimp on your training and education. Don’t rush in to offering services before you are ready, never stop asking questions or asking for help and connecting with others in the industry.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

The most helpful thing in this industry is other artist willing to share their discoveries and new techniques.
We are a tight knit community of women and men helping each other in order so see us all become successful. Gatekeeping is not something I ever see in our forums and I love the online community of artists who are happy to share advice and tips to the newer artist. The better we all get and the more education we all get from each other as well as training is going to show in our work. Since we are being entrusted by these clients we should all want to see each other succeed and put out beautiful work.
There are hundreds of Facebook groups dedicated to this very thing and it definitely helps in learning the ins and outs, the dos and donts as well as sharing our work with other artist and get their input as well.
