Meet Jessica Stamm

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Stamm. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.

Jessica , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
How did I find my purpose is such a big question! I feel that throughout my career my “purpose” has changed and evolved each year. Initially, I found purpose in being a dietitian because I felt health and nutrition were so broad and had so much misinformation floating around. I wanted to be able to help clients with nutrition material that would weed through the chaos and simplify how to shop and eat in a health-minded way but also one that was practical and personalized for each individual. After working in the nutrition field for now over fifteen years, this career purpose has shifted to one that I feel is much more important and I have so much more passion for. I still work with clients to find realistic and individual plans but I have a large emphasis on intuitive eating, positive body image and non-diet centered counseling. I find myself truly joyful and feeling full of purpose when I finish a consult and a client expresses less stress around food and had regained their love of mealtimes again. This “healthy medium” nutrition mind-frame has become even more important to me after becoming a mother and going through many health issues of my own including binge eating, miscarriage and thyroid problems.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a practicing dietitian with an emphasis on intuitive eating with a non-diet approach. My goal with starting Healthy Medium Nutrition was to be able to meet people where they are currently and help restructure health goals and find the why behind them. I am known for being a nutrition counselor that will do things a little different than other dietitians you may have met with – I do not make lists of good foods versus bad foods or eliminate food groups, etc. Instead I love to bring the joy back with the eating experience and find ways for clients to feel their best not only physically but mentally with their food choices. I like to think outside the box and love doing workshop setting talks or meeting one on one.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things that were probably the most impactful on my journey to become a dietitian specializing in mindfulness, would be personal experience, awesome mentors and a support system. For those early in their journey I would recommend seeking out more from all three! When I first started working in nutrition, I was afraid to talk about personal experience thinking people would judge me. Instead I found quite the opposite, sharing hardships and being real make you human and can oftentimes aid in your career and personal life. Second, find your passion and seek mentors within that. I have worked with Dietitians in the intuitive eating realm and continue to grow my knowledge with other classes and certifications associated with intuitive eating/mindfulness. Lastly allow yourself to accept support from those that truly care about you and believe in you and your career goals! I have found support from my family members, fellow moms around me and more!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for people and places that appreciate the positive body image and intuitive/mindful eating approach. I would love to partner with other professionals to build a place where families can seek support for multiple areas in the health industry. Perhaps a one stop shop for nutrition for kids and/or moms, plus mental health support and fellow parenting support! I would love to be able to do that in the Crescenta-Canada community.
