Meet Jessica Wellington

We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Wellington recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Coming from such a crazy family life, comedy helps me put things behind me. I know once I can naturally talk about something on stage that I’ve officially put that behind me. Of course I’m in therapy but nothing helps more than just getting on stage. If you are too connected to a problem or past event the joke will not land. This sounds insane but I promise you I’ve done it. Once I could say on stage my mom was a drug addict and had aids I knew I wasn’t holding on to pain anymore. We can’t make the past go away but we can make sure it doesn’t over take us.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Standup comedy is my passion. I hope to help others through it. Knowing you aren’t alone is huge. I also make fun earrings. I had to grow up fast but with fun earrings and silly jokes I get to be a kid again in a way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The pure will to not give up. The road in entertainment is not easy. If you are not committed and know this is what you want you will not make it far. Someone asked Joan Rivers, how many of the friends you came up with made it? She said all of them that stuck with it! Eventually if you are doing the work and always improving your time will come. For new folks I would say be in it for the long game and don’t expect money/fame out the gate.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

Psychopath Free is the audio book that opened my eyes to how some people think. This business is filled with narcissists so knowing how they think is very helpful. Knowing how they tick can help you keep your cool and get the job!
