Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Wrickerson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is a quality that I believe is forged through the trials and tribulations we face throughout our lives. As a 37 year old African American woman, my journey has not been without challenges. Growing up in a community where opportunities were often limited, I faced obstacles that could have easily discouraged me. However, each setback became a stepping stone, teaching me invaluable lessons about perseverance and strength.
One significant turning point was when I lost a loved one unexpectedly. That experience was profoundly painful, yet it taught me the importance of cherishing every moment and supporting others through their hardships. I learned that resilience isn’t just about enduring, it’s also about uplifting those around you and finding a way to continue moving forward despite the pain.
Additionally, navigating my career in spaces where I was often underrepresented made me acutely aware of the hurdles many people face. Each challenge I encountered only fueled my determination to break barriers and create opportunities, not just for myself, but for others who might be struggling in similar ways.
Ultimately, my resilience comes from a combination of my personal experiences, the love and support of my family and community, and my unwavering belief in the power of hope and determination. It’s a reminder that while challenges are an inevitable part of my life, they can also lead to growth and transformation. Each obstacle has shaped me into who I am today. A stronger more compassionate person, ready to face whatever comes next.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My journey has been guided by a deep love for people and a desire to make a meaningful impact. I started my professional life as a teacher, where I nurtured and inspired young minds, and that passion for serving others has carried into my career as a real estate agent.
What excites me most about real estate is the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and help them achieve one of the most significant milestones in their lives, owning a home. For me, it’s not just about closing deals; it’s about building relationships and being a trusted guide through a process that can often feel overwhelming. There’s nothing more fulfilling than handing over the keys to someone’s dream home and knowing I played a part in making that dream come true.
Recently, I hosted a first-time homebuyers’ seminar for my community, which was one of the most rewarding experiences in my career. It was important for me to provide real, practical knowledge to empower individuals, many of whom never thought homeownership was within their reach. Seeing their confidence grow as they learned about the process was inspiring, and I’m grateful to be able to continue offering support and guidance to those taking that leap.
Ultimately, my work is about more than homes, it’s about people, their stories, and their futures. My goal is to build a brand rooted in trust, education, and a genuine commitment to helping others realize their dreams.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say three qualities that truely shaped my journey were confidence, self-assurance, and consistency.
Confidence gave me the courage to step into spaces where I wasn’t always invited or expected. It’s not about arrogance, it’s about knowing I belong and that my ideas matter, even when others can’t see the vision yet.
Self-assurance was the inner anchor that kept me grounded. It’s that quiet voice reminding me, “You’ve got this,” even on the hardest days. Especially as a Black woman, I had to build that belief in myself and my abilities because the world doesn’t always hand it to us.
And then there’s consistency. Success isn’t always glamorous, it’s showing up, day in and day out, even when the results aren’t immediate. Consistency builds trust, not just with others but with yourself.
For those just starting out, my advice is this:
1. Confidence comes from preparation. Own your craft, know your stuff, and don’t be afraid to celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
2. Self-assurance grows when you stop comparing yourself to others. Run your own race and trust that your path is uniquely yours.
3. Consistency is about discipline. Start by committing to small, achievable goals, and over time, you’ll build momentum that’s unstoppable.
Remember, your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Lean into your authenticity, keep showing up, and trust that you’re planting seeds for something beautiful.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been learning to face my fears and truly put myself out there. I’ve always been someone who valued connections, but stepping outside of my comfort zone to meet new people and intentionally build professional relationships was a challenge I had avoided for too long.
This journey included not only attending networking events but also embracing a social media presence, something I once found intimidating. Sharing my story, my work, and my values online felt vulnerable at first, but it has become a powerful tool for connections and growth.
What I’ve learned is that people are drawn to authenticity. By showing up as my true self, I’ve not only built a stronger network but also discovered a deeper confidence in my own voice. The relationships I’ve formed have not only opened doors but have enriched my life in ways I never anticipated. It’s been humbling to see how small steps toward courage can lead to big changes.
