Hi Jessica, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

First, accept that imposter syndrome is a common, normal feeling among individuals. You should keep a personal record of your accomplishments, even if they are small. Constantly remind yourself of your personal successes and the hard work you have put in to get where you are today. Always surround yourself with people who believe in you and your abilities. Try to replace negativity with positive affirmations and challenge all self-doubt. You don’t need to know everything because we are always continuously learning and growing. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t mention self-care and how important it is for everyone, especially when it comes to our mental health. My skincare business is based on self-care and taking the time for yourself, even if it’s just 5 to 10 minutes. We all need to squeeze it into our daily routine if possible, or at least a few times a week.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I became a small business owner because I am deeply passionate about the field of chemistry and skincare. My journey as a chemist spans over 14 years, during which I developed a profound love for understanding the science behind skincare products. But it wasn’t just my professional background that led me to start Jessica’s Skincare Laboratories; it was also a personal journey filled with skin issues, notably eczema. Throughout my life, I battled various skin problems, with eczema being a prominent and persistent challenge. These personal experiences ignited a desire within me to not only comprehend the chemistry of skincare but also to create effective solutions for common skin issues. I realized there was a gap in the market for skincare products that were not only scientifically sound but also genuinely transformative for those dealing with skin concerns. This realization, combined with my expertise as a chemist, became the driving force behind the inception of Jessica’s Skincare Laboratories. The goal was simple yet profound: to develop skincare products that could truly make a difference in people’s lives. For our future skincare line, each product in our line has been meticulously formulated and tested, leveraging my scientific knowledge to provide innovative solutions to everyday skincare challenges. My small business isn’t just about selling skincare products; it’s about delivering confidence, comfort, and results to individuals who have faced the same struggles I did. We will be rebranding some products, launching a new skincare line, perfume and cologne, and of course having more Self Care Sunday events for people to experience not only our amazing products, but gain knowledge about their skin through our estheticians, while also being able to enjoy an amazing massage.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My deep understanding of chemistry has been crucial in formulating effective skincare products. This knowledge allowed me to create scientifically sound solutions for common skin issues. The ability to persevere through failures, scams, and setbacks has been essential. This resilience has kept me moving forward and continuously striving to achieve my goals. My personal experiences with skin issues, like eczema, fueled my passion for skincare. This passion drives my commitment to developing products that genuinely help people achieve healthier, happier skin. The goal should be to never give up on your dreams. Starting a business is challenging and requires a significant investment of time and money, depending on your field. When you are ready to take the leap, don’t look back—keep pushing forward. I have faced numerous failures and even been scammed, but I know it’s all worth it because I love what I do. Through Jessica’s Skincare Laboratories, I aim to share the benefits of my expertise and passion for chemistry with the world, helping people achieve healthier, happier skin. In the ever-evolving landscape of skincare, my commitment is to continue innovating, offering top-quality products, and providing the care and attention my customers deserve. What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

The number one obstacle I’m currently facing is finance, along with attracting customers to buy from my website, brand awareness, and marketing. To overcome these challenges, I am focusing on several strategies: I am exploring various funding options such as grants, loans, and investment opportunities to secure the necessary capital for growth. Additionally, I am carefully managing expenses and reinvesting profits back into the business. I am leveraging social media platforms to build a strong online presence and engage with potential customers. By creating valuable content, collaborating with influencers, and utilizing targeted advertising, I aim to increase brand visibility and drive traffic to my website. I am developing a comprehensive marketing plan that includes both digital and traditional methods. This plan involves email marketing, SEO optimization, partnerships with complementary brands, and attending industry events to expand my network and reach a wider audience. Through these focused efforts, I am confident that I can overcome these obstacles and continue to grow Jessica’s Skincare Laboratories.
