Meet Jessie Root

We were lucky to catch up with Jessie Root recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jessie, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I was fortunate enough to have two great in examples on my life.
I remember waking up to the smell of coffee brewing almost every morning of my childhood. It was a staple of my father and grandfather’s breakfast routine.

At my parents’ house, I would sit in front of the TV, listening to my dad get ready for work. Regardless of the weather—whether it was over 100 degrees or below freezing—he went out and worked harder than most of us ever will, always providing for his family no matter the personal cost.

My grandfather was a dairy farmer his entire life. His mornings began extremely early, often before the sun rose. I would lie in bed, listening to the sounds of breakfast and watching one of the hardest-working men I’ve ever known prepare to provide for his family. He did this every day, every month, every year, until he passed away in 2022.

I spent much of my childhood between these two homes, but no matter where I was, I learned the value of a strong work ethic.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’ve spent a decade perfecting my skills as a fire breather, human blockhead, glass walker, and circus stuntman. I like to think my natural confidence and comedic flair make me an excellent ring leader. Becoming a circus stuntman has been hard work and challenging,

Over the past five years, my wife and I have worked tirelessly to create our show. The Schitt Show is enjoyable for all ages. Whether it’s a kid’s birthday party or a bachelor or bridal party, we bring over an hour of comedy, magic, singing, fire performances, and circus stunts. We love seeing people have fun.

We offer a complete party service, working within your budget to customize the length and type of circus show you want. We take pride in delivering a show you can enjoy repeatedly. Our performances are ever-changing as we continuously learn new stunts, tricks, gags, music, and fun!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Be patient! Anything you build, a brand, a business, a show, anything takes time. It’s not all gonna happen at once, and you can’t do it all at once.
So take time to breath and calm yourself. Be patient, it’s happening! It’s just one step at a time.

Get organized! I had to pack and repack The Schitt Show over and over again until it became a routine. Being a traveling circus show, it’s a lot of props, safety equipment and decor that goes into every show. Plus, keeping show dates scheduled, social media content produced and posted. Then keeping all of our other performers from all over the place on time and in place for shows. Getting all of that organized is a task.

Stay dedicated! You’re gonna have bad days, bad investments, bad shows.
It’s hard when the crowds won’t clap, when they just don’t get the jokes and the stunts just aren’t doing it for them. Sometimes it’s not even the audience, it’s me. Every now and then I’m just not in it when I get on stage at first. You gotta keep going. Keep your head up and know that it’ll pass and you’ll be killing it soon enough. Stay dedicated to your destiny.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

“My most brilliant achievement was my ability to persuade my wife to marry me.” -Winston Churchill

My wife, Crystal, is my everything. The Schitt Show simply wouldn’t exist without her. While I’m often a “hot mess,” she keeps me on track with our show. She manages our calendar, ensures we have everything we need for each performance, and does it all flawlessly. Crystal is the most amazing person I’ve ever met—kind, understanding, patient, dedicated, and passionate. I could go on forever. She’s my best friend!
