We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessie Yarborough a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I am not sure there is a one size fits all cure for imposter syndrome, I think as I grow and mature I have to find new ways to overcome it. Especially as a creative. There is always something new on the market, things to keep up with, artists to compare yourself with, and is ever evolving. I think the biggest thing for me is stepping into my authentic self and trusting the jobs and clients I align with, that become regulars for me. If I am being purely myself and delivering my favorite version of my art and craft, and they continue to return, it instills and ensures my confidence in what I bring to the table. It is not easy by any means and seems cliche, but as you trust yourself and are proud of what you create, those who align with it will come and allow you to feel validated in your work.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a makeup artist and mens groomer specializing in natural glam. Right now I am focused on expanding my brand and clientele to be bi-coastal ,and experiencing new adventures and work relationships.I am excited to see the new relationships I build and work that I create in new markets in NYC.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities I believe that got me to where I am are my sense of adventure, boldness, and craving more. I always see want to strive for more, for bigger, and am always seeing ways to improve and expand my vision and creativity. I think thats the best advice to give to a new creative there is always more. In my industry there are so many ways to “make it”, when one lane doesn’t feel like its working, you can explore another. You can’t accept rejection. There is a place for you in your field, and if its not seeming to work, try another lane, you will still get there.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein is a very staple part of my journey, and a book I continually go back to. My career is bigger than just me, it’s a part of my journey and my way I give back to the world. This book continues to bring me back to realizing what is for me, will be, and to continue to believe in myself and the path I am creating because the universe is for me and not against me. Sometimes its as simple as that, a reminder I need, to trust what is for me, will be.
