We were lucky to catch up with Jessika Gatewood recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessika, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from growing up with a bit of a tough start. I had to develop strong work ethic early on and that shaped how I approach challenged today. Running a design business comes with its obit les but having a foundation of resilience has helped me stay focused and keep moving forward even when things don’t go as planned.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We’d love to feature you and learn more about how you acquired the skills, knowledge, and habits that helped you get to where you are today.
Growing up, I spent hours flipping through design magazines, studying every detail and figuring out how to recreate those looks in my own bedroom.
A lot of what I’ve learned has come from hands-on experience. Nothing teaches you faster than being in the middle of a project and having to problem solve on the spot. But hive always been committed to growing my skills. I regularly take continuing education courses, and I’m constantly reading books, listening to podcasts, and researching new materials and styles. This industry evolves quickly and staying curious has helped me stay inspired and keep my work fresh.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say being adaptable, staying curious, and embracing challenges.
My advice would be to make learning a habit, stay curious and embrace challenges. Some of my best design decisions came from needing to adapt to a problem.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are always excited to partner with clients looking to build their dream home and contractors who are looking to partner with designer to create a high quality and standout homes
