We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessika Hatter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessika, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from a life that demanded it. My biological father passed away when I was four, and I was raised primarily by my mother, whose struggles with addiction and personal demons sometimes left me to navigate childhood on my own. My stepdad came into my life at five, offering stability and perspective, showing me that support can come in many forms even when life feels uncertain.
These early experiences taught me to stand strong, adapt, and find my own way. As an adult, I survived postpartum depression, navigated three major career changes, and now fiercely advocate for my six year old autistic child. Along the way, I was diagnosed with OCD, ASD, and CPTSD, insights that strengthened my confidence, self-understanding, and ability to approach life with intention.
Resilience, for me, isn’t just about enduring challenges; it’s about rising from them, showing up fully, and striving to leave situations and people better than I found them. It has sometimes meant setting aside my own way to meet life’s demands, but it has always been a choice grounded in grit, empathy, and the refusal to let hardship define me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a hairstylist specializing in vivid color and healthy hair transformations. What excites me most is helping clients achieve the hair they’ve always dreamed of while keeping it strong and healthy. I focus on long-term journeys, whether maintaining vibrant color, achieving seamless gray coverage, or transforming damaged hair into something manageable and beautiful. Every service I offer is intentional, combining technical skill with care, so clients leave feeling confident and empowered.
Through the life I’ve journeyed, surviving postpartum depression, navigating three major career changes, and raising autistic child. I bring depth and perspective into the salon. I share what I’ve learned while embracing my clients’ stories. A client once told me I’m a keeper of stories. I don’t just repeat them; I carry the emotional weight, tone, and empathy each story deserves. This creates a space where people feel seen, understood, and valued.
I’m currently focused on refining and expanding services that combine high-impact color with optimal hair health, so every client leaves not only with the look they envisioned, but with stronger, healthier hair and an experience that truly matters.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, life, full of big changes, challenges, and parenthood, taught me lessons that still shape who I am. The three qualities that mattered most:
1. Resilience – Things will throw you curveballs. The key is to keep moving, adapt, and learn along the way. Tip for anyone starting out: treat obstacles as opportunities to grow and build habits that strengthen your grit.
2. Empathy and Emotional Awareness – Listening is more than hearing words; it’s noticing tone, feeling, and context. Tip: really tune in, reflect, and respond with care. You’ll build trust and connection that lasts.
3. Technical Skill and Curiosity – Talent gets you started, but mastering your craft takes practice and curiosity. Tip: keep learning, experiment, and grow through mistakes. Your foundation plus curiosity is unstoppable.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is authentically themselves. They come to accentuate their beauty, find their truest self through their hair, or use it as a form of self-expression. I am not just there for the hair. I am your personal hair-apist, listening, supporting, and guiding you so you leave feeling like your truest self.
They value creativity and care, want bold results while keeping their hair healthy, and are confident enough to bring their own vision. The salon experience is intentional and meaningful. I honor their stories with empathy and care, creating a space where hair becomes both a canvas and a platform for self-expression and confidence.
