Meet Jesus Contreras

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesus Contreras. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesus below.

Jesus, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

From a very young age, I was faced with obstacle after obstacle.

I always felt like I never fit in fully anywhere.
Being a gay boy growing up, I was always judged or ridiculed for looking/acting / talking different from the other boys.

Even though it was painful, I knew that the sparkle in me was gifted to me for a reason.
I kept going and pushed and stood strong in my light and uniqueness.

I learned to trust myself and Keep going, the obstacle you face would not have appeared in front of you, if you did not have the strength the overcome it.

You most definitely have the power to manifest your desired reality through consistency, ambition, trust and love.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Jesus Contreras owner of HairglowzStudio in Las Vegas.

I have been a hairstylist for almost 7 years now. Started off at Supercuts, then became an assistant, and in 2021 became self employed.

I became interested in hair, fashion, and beauty at a very young age.
At 11 years old I began cutting my own hair because I had a very specific vision that my parents hairstylist could not bring to life.
And that’s where my love for hair and beauty started.

At 15 I “came out” to my parents and was met with resistance, unsupportive, and negative comments. But once again, I stood strong in who I knew I was.

At 20 I made the decision to go to cosmetology school and start my education.
Once again… I was met with unsupportive doubt and disbelief that I could actually make a career and living
by becoming “just” a hairstylist.

Now at 29, I am a hair studio owner, educator, and content creator. Living my wildest dreams and doing what I love…

My “job” is to empower and uplift people around me and show them that their beauty was always within them… I just helped bring it out of them.

If anyone can take anything from my story,
Remember this, if a first generation Mexican American gay boy that came from poverty can live his wildest dreams…..
You most definitely have the power to manifest your desired reality.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Persistence, Openness, and Adaptability.

We all have a dream and a vision about what we think our life should be or look like.

If you can dream it, picture it, you most definitely can achieve it.

It won’t be easy, but through persistence and consistency, and taking one step every single day towards that goal, you get closer and closer to the person that you want to become.

Sometimes we expect our journey to look a certain way, but the universe has a way of showing us something different, a path of growth and spontaneity, so we have to learn to adapt to the opportunities that life puts in front of us.

Our path and our journey will look different than what we think or expect of it, but as long as we adapt, persevere, and be open to the possibilities.

Your dreams will come to fruition

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

The biggest area of growth has honestly been finding my most authentic self.

And it sounds super cliché when we talk about authenticity but there is beauty in that.

We come into this world, knowing exactly who we are, but along the way we are taught to hide, change, and suppress certain parts of ourselves.

So my biggest area of growth has been uncovering who I truly am within me. Not my job title, not my accomplishments, not my bank account…

The biggest area of growth has been finding me and living my most inner truth.
Because in that beautiful journey I have been able to show up better for everyone around me.
