We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesus Ibarra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesus below.
Hi Jesus , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I was born in a poor town and I grew up in a city town as poor as my place of birth. Since my early years I knew that If I wanted anything, I needed to work hard to get it. I have been working since I was ten years old and I have experienced a lot of solitude since childhood. I know that nothing is free. Those experiences helped me to develop my inner power. If I want anything it’s up to me and no one else.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Since I was a teenager, I dreamed of writing a book. I spent many years figuring out what kind of story I wanted to tell. It took me a long time to put together my first poetry book. I wrote it when I was 40 years old. I needed to wait another 10 years to write my second book. After that, my brain turned loose with stories and I wrote my third book and the fourth. To this day I have written 7 books and I’m about to finish another one.
I’m also promoting some photos from one of my books called: Detroit, Art, Beauty, Chaos. It is available on Amazon.
Those pictures are in exhibition at the Ellen Kayrod Gallery in Detroit MI.
I am about to finish another book, called, “A Hundred Memories.”
I have a children’s book in process in collaboration with a young and talented painter from Detroit.
I am also creating wood art, especially wood frames for my original pictures.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reading has been one of the most fascinating tools to gain knowledge and inspiration I have ever had. I believe that a person who reads expands their creativity in unimaginable ways. To me, reading should be a must. I make my living as a carpenter and this skill has proved to be an outstanding art expression. I highly recommend to anyone to practice a hobby, especially if they are considering to aim their life into art. Another important aspect of developing a skill is that we need to practice without fear of failing. Trial and error are the keys to mastering any skill.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The biggest challenge I’m facing is the promotion of my books. I’m not good at getting on social media and promoting my work. I also have found it difficult to gain access to bookstores, literary agents, and publishing companies. I believe that despite these setbacks, eventually I will overcome them and will be able to reach people who are interested in the kind of writing I create.
