We recently connected with Jesus Sanchez and have shared our conversation below.
Jesus, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
I’d say it’s one of the most important things I learned from my parents and people around me, they always taught me to be the best in anything i tried. I also practiced sports most of my life and discipline is something that impacts sports as much as life itself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a 22 year old Mexican artist specializing in Tattoos and oil painting. I’d say everything about it is pretty exciting to me, just the fact of creating something that wasn’t there before and even better, on somebody’s body! The most exciting part is how people feel after looking at their finished tattoo after a long session, it’s crazy how much impact a piece of art can have in someone’s life.
I started in Mexico 6 years ago and decided to move to the U.S. to keep growing as an artist about 3-4 years ago. It’s definitely been a crazy journey full of different cities and people and im more motivated than ever to keep getting better and representing my culture.
I’ll start working in a new shop here in Charlotte, N.C. and ill start taking on bigger and more complex projects, so im very excited to share the next step in my journey.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience is on top of my list, being able to believe in something you can’t see yet and putting in the work to get there while enjoying the process.
Resilience, adapting to circumstances and the environment is something important I learned when i left my life behind to keep growing in my journey, its not easy but it can be very rewarding if you stick to the goal.
And paying attention to my spirituality, meaning my subconscious and the universe itself. Being connected with my intuition and that little voice in my head has been crucial to stay true to myself and not letting the wrong energies influence me.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Ive been around great mentors and artists, so its impossible to list everybody that helped me become who i am, but obviously my parents have been the biggest support in this unconventional path, right after that my Tattoo mentor definitely paved the way for me and showed me what a true artist is and to never feel that im worth less than anyone else.
