We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jet G. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jet below.
Jet, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome barks the loudest when I use music 2 tell stories. In January, I performed my first song at Junior High LA with my friend Britton Bentley. Before taking the stage, Imposter syndrome snuck up on me with whispers of “Are u prepared enough?” or “Did they choose u on accident”. I pulled myself away from that wack-ass voice by remembering “It’s not about me. This is about connecting with others. I’m a vessel.”
I then used an anchoring statement that I stole from my grandfather “If G*d put you there, then you’re supposed to be there”
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a storyteller who knows the era of putting your message in one medium is over! I look up 2 performers/writers like Donald Glover who express their POV in TV/Film, Music, and stand-up. Don’t worry, I focus on one thing at a time 🙂
My friends describe my last few years as “legendary” – I’ve earned a Sundance Institute Fellowship, produced a splashy web series, AND racked up almost a million views performing stand-up on the podcast Kill Tony.
Performing and writing go hand-in-hand 4 me. When I connect with crowds, I remember my purpose. But in order to connect, I need something powerful to say. And that’s where writing comes in.
I’m developing several deeply personal projects including a stand up special and a series with some exciting names.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Earlier in my career, I boss-battled imposter syndrome a lot and If I could go back in time I’d tell my younger self:
– Don’t be perfect. Be Clear. Be U. Have fun.
– Find a healthy supportive community
– Reflect on your past wins
Be consistent and patient with yourself as you develop these practices.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m looking 4 investors, influencers, and music producers.
I’m building a collective of artists and investors where we can collaborate 2 make iconic content like Atlanta or Fleabag without gatekeepers. If you’re down, shoot me a message on IG or email me at imjetg@gmail.com.
