We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jewel Mensah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jewel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I don’t know if I found my purpose as much as it found me. I spent years in spaces contorting what I thought was my purpose. It took some hard truths, some recognition of who I was and how I ended up where I was, to come to terms with it. I had to surrender to myself. Through the seas of undoing, we found each other.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The easiest way to summarize what I do is channeling light through creativity. It’s taken various forms for me, from visual art with photography and filmmaking to the written word. I’m on a mission to share my gifts and I’ve recently launched my own creative studio: jwlm.space
I offer services across creative direction, photography, videography, branding, and more. These combine my passions, blending my artistic practice with years of experience in professional services, from marketing and advertising to design and consulting. The best place to stay updated is through my LinkedIn, I love connecting with people there. Anyone looking for creative solutions or connections can visit jwlm.space or reach out here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jewelmensah
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the one of the most important qualities is curiosity. Early on, I recognized that there was so much I did not know and still do not know. I remain curious enough to learn, to explore, to be inspired. The second most important quality from my experience, is bravery. The unknown can be scary, yet if you can find a way to show up, you will thank yourself later. The last but not the least important skill to have is building relationships. No business, skill, or artwork exist in a void. When I first ventured into becoming an author, writing my own book and engaging new ideas, I didn’t know anything about putting my work in the public. However, through curiosity, bravery, and a willingness to build new relationships both with people I already knew and people I was meeting for the first time became crucial. I was able to self publish my first book. These lessons stay with me as I work on my next book and art piece.
