Meet Jill Carey

We recently connected with Jill Carey and have shared our conversation below.

Jill, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My parents.
I’m the child of a blue collar veteran and an immigrant who came to the US, alone, at 17.

I was lucky enough to grow up with my father running his auto repair business in our backyard. Growing up I would go out to the garage and “work” with my dad and his guys in the shop. My dad worked hard, was kind and loved what he did making it not even seem like work. When I got older I earned money by cleaning the cars and packaging packages. I couldn’t wait to be old enough to have a “real job”

My mum didn’t have a “job” in my childhood, but that didn’t stop her from showing me what hard work was. She never stopped. She was always doing or making something: I’ve always said she was magic or Mother Nature because she had an ability to create something beautiful out of nothing.

Once I got old for school my mum started working at our schools as a lunch lady so we could see her and she could be home with us after school,

In their early 80’s they both still work: My mum tried to retire but she couldn’t do nothing and went back to work.

They have both taught me that if you love what you do and do it with passion and love anything is possible!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

The Northshore, Nice People of the Northshore

The Northshore has been my dream come to reality. After 27 years in a mortgage banking career I made the decision to walk away and start a completely new and different career. I couldn’t be more excited about it!

The Northshore is not only my home but my dream realized. For years I toyed with the idea of creating a brand that spoke to and served this community that is so near and dear to my heart. If you’ve spent time on the Northshore, you know – it’s a place like no other. It’s salty and rough around the edges, but it’s also one of the most beautiful and welcoming places on earth, and it’s our time to shine.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

No one knows everything, we can all learn something. No matter how smart you are or how much you think you know, we can all learn something from someone. There is a a lesson or a blessing in every situation in life. Approach your life with an open mind and heart. You can learn something new everyday.

Follow your instincts.
Looking back in life the times where things had gone “wrong” at some point I knew that it would go that way. At some point my intuition had warned me. But I ignored it. Now when I get those feelings, I listen.

Surround yourself with people who talk about ideas and things, not other people.
If you are surrounded by people who talk about people, guess what they talk about the and they will never be able to help you grow.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

How do you eat a dinosaur?

One bite at a time.

I had started a new job and was getting “settled” in and by settled in I mean completely overwhelmed with everything I had to do. The manager who hired me noticed I was spiraling, called me into his office and said exactly that. How do you eat a dinosaur? one bite at a time.. At the time my young stubborn self rolled my eyes, walked out of the room and thought to myself, He doesn’t understand how much there is to be done and how much pressure there is fast-forward almost 20 years later. I use that statement a lot when I am getting overwhelmed..

Be present
Take it one step at a time
Take a break. Take a walk. Clear your mind.
If you fail, that’s OK. Tomorrow’s a new day. Start over and start again.
It will get done. It will work out.
