We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jill Ettinger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
It’s perhaps an overused term, but self-care seems more important than ever. I used to think working around the clock was essential. I stayed up all night, woke early, and worked non-stop. It didn’t feel like anything was missing or wrong. But it’s only when I was forced to take a step back after the birth of my daughter a decade ago that I realized what self-care really was and why it’s so essential.
I don’t have a set definition for self-care. Sometimes it’s as simple as a few extra minutes in the shower. Maybe it’s sipping coffee in the yard during the quiet early hours. The other day, it was watching a swallowtail butterfly (the largest species in North America!) dart all across the yard for nearly an hour. When we’re not experiencing a heat wave, it’s a three-hour hike through the beautiful LA wilderness. It’s a vacation, a spa day, a bit of meditation.
While describing self-care is a bit elusive, identifying what it’s not is easy: it’s not doing work, even though I love what I do. It’s not doomscrolling on the device, sitting in traffic, or putting myself in an environment with toxic people.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. I don’t love describing work as “passion” but having a keen interest or even a slight fascination with something is so important in building a life and career that’s meaningful. That informs so much of how we look at the rest of the world; when we have a deep joy and purpose, we see the potential for that everywhere. It invites our creativity, our faith in ourselves, and our abilities to work with others and build the world we want to see.
2. Understanding that new rules can be made as we go along is a game-changer. The world has been remade countless times over by visionaries who decided to do things another way. That doesn’t mean we have to reject every rule or standard that came before us, but knowing that there’s wiggle room is a huge leg up. This also invites creativity and new ways of thinking.
3. Stay the course. The world is always changing. It can take time for things to develop and harden into the realized version of your vision. Sometimes slight tweaks or pivots are necessary, but don’t abandon your dreams, especially if you know in your heart it’s what you’re meant to do.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
