We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jill Laux, CEO of Mix Media. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jill below.
Jill, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
Risk taking. I kind of love it. Not in the physical sense of jumping off of cliffs or hiking the toughest terrain…more in the sense of feeling the rush of what could be. How can my life be more free, more fun, more peaceful if I take a chance and do this one thing differently?
I developed a sense of comfort with risk taking by asking myself one simple question “if I fail at this what’s the worst thing that could happen?” And 9 times out of 10 the fail part doesn’t seem so bad. I realized that just by being thoughtful in answering this one question will open doors to many opportunities that I wouldn’t have ever get to experience if I stayed in my little comfy box.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Mix Media is an advertising consulting firm specializing in lead generation, brand awareness and media strategy that I created in 2018. We saw the need for small to medium sized companies who needed solid and creative direction in their marketing efforts in order to gain market share faster than their competitors. And I had spent 18 years in an advertising sales role with both KMOV and KSDK so I knew how to create advertising campaigns for my clients that produced real results.
But there was something missing in the ad campaigns that I had created previously…the freedom to develop pure “out of the box” uniqueness when you’re working in a corporate environment. That missing piece drove me to create Mix Media, an advertising firm that takes the pain out of marketing for your business, creates a positive impact on your bottom line, and has the freedom to get creative without being held by corporate confines. Mix Media relationships run deep in St. Louis which gives us the opportunity to stretch marketing dollars to the max…and we have a little fun along the way!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Have confidence in your area of expertise. Tell that imposter syndrome to quiet down a bit, trust yourself and that your knowledge and experience will lead to success. 2) Don’t be defensive. One of my favorite bosses taught me not to spend time thinking of how you will overcome the objection before listening to the entire objection. Most times clients just need to be heard first. Trust yourself that you’re smart enough to develop a solution when the time is right.
3) Take risks! Make yourself open to accepting new challenges. One of the most fulfilling aspects of owning Mix Media is that I’m offered unique opportunities that, while are a bit uncomfortable because they are new to me, also push me to grow and gain knowledge for which I’m so grateful.
