Meet Jill Malek

We were lucky to catch up with Jill Malek recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jill, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
At some point in my career, I pivoted my thinking from “How can I get more?” to “How can I be of service to others?”. That was a game changer. When I focused more on helping and supporting others, I was able to get very clear on what lit me up, what continued to inspire me, and what unique gifts I had to share that could make an impact. As a designer of wallcoverings, murals and other large-scale textile goods, I then meditated on healing spaces, such as healthcare environments, workspaces, inspired homes…all areas where I could positively help to shift the energy in a space with movement, color, texture and light. All of these types of spaces now actively make up the fiber of my business.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I design wallcoverings, rugs, and surface designs. I have my own line of product offerings and also design collections for other companies. My most recent collection was for Skyline Design, an amazing business offering modern architectural glass partitions. I am known for my abstract linework and patterns inspired by poetic forms in nature.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Uniqueness. If you have a unique perspective, story, artistic hand, or general concept, you will stay in the consciousness of others. How can you be your most authentic self every day and share your unique gifts with others?

2. Take your time. If something doesn’t look or feel right, its not. Take the time to work out all of the kinks, and inconsistencies so that its flawless. Remember, God is in the Details.

3, Have fun. I think if you are able to interact with your craft so that it lights you up and you have FUN with it, others will be attracted to your brand.

In summary:
Be Unique, Be Flawless, and HAVE FUN.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
For the most part, I grew up in a single parent home since the age of 10 and my mother was a huge support and gave me the space and freedom to become who I am. For example, when I was 17, after a particularly hard day, I felt compelled to draw a mural on my bedroom wall. My mother did not try to micromanage this activity, and in fact encouraged it. She subsequently had me paint a mural in her work office, which gave birth to a painted mural in my college dorm (my roomate was also very supportive), and here I am today, offering a much more sophisticated version of mural arts to my clients. It’s always imperative to surround yourself with those that can be your advocate, and help to carry you.
