We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jill Oscar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jill below.
Jill , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I am in an art studio at least once a week studying and creating oil painting. Painting is Mentally stimulating for me as well as creative. Having the discipline it takes to sit in front of a painting and problem solve prepares me as a makeup artist.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a professional makeup artist. I have been working in the field of entertainment for about 15 years. I have done everything from feature film and television shows to weddings and corporate videos. It’s exciting because the projects are always different which keeps me always thinking outside the box and challenged. My talent as an artist started when I was very young. I always had a paint brush or pencil in my hand constantly painting or drawing. There was no question that I was going to do something with in the arts. My talent as an artist is only have of what it takes to be successful. I think I’m special in the way I can relate to people and how they feel after I complete their makeup. I am focused on doing my job to the best of my ability. I am always experimenting with new ways to do things. Whether it is applying eye Lashes to perfection or how to cover a tattoo, I am all about my craft. When I’m not doing makeup, you can find me at Burlini Studio of the Arts in Boca Raton working on my next masterpiece.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The qualities and skills that were most impactful to me in this field would be: Flexibility, situations change constantly. Anything from the shoot location to call times to length of day to bridal party schedule. Everything can change on a dime and I need to be prepared for that. I think as a makeup artist I wasn’t aware I needed to know how to style hair too! That was a very important lesson to be learned. My advice to anyone coming up in this field is to learn how to do both hair and makeup.. Also Perseverance is key to success. Starting out in this field I found that I had to take a couple of jobs for free to prove my worth. The paying jobs started come after but I never gave up.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
relying on myself to overcome challenges and building an essential skill set has helped me become a successful artist. There were no shortcuts for me and no one has helped me along the way. Practicing my craft and being a team player that does what’s asked is why I get hired back..
