We were lucky to catch up with Jill Scheid & Nichole Salzman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jill Scheid &, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
We get our resilience from life experience. Taking chances such as launching a business creates learning experiences and during the process, you get knocked down, and you learn. Nichole is also a mother of a child that had a rough start in life and a rare condition called FPIES which is Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome. Nothing makes you more resilient than motherhood. Jill is a true entrepreneur and took a leap of faith launching a successful business only to be shut down by the pandemic. She dusted herself off and switched gears into a new sales endeavor, perfecting her art of sales. With each experience comes more resilience. The strongest are not those that have it easy.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
We are the owners of Nobuko Shave Ice. We began our friendship on a flag football field in the San Fernando Valley. On the field we blocked each other, off the field we paved the way to start a business together. Sharing a love for shave ice, we would meet at different shave ice spots around the Los Angeles area seeking the perfect blend of fluffy ice and flavor.
In early 2022, Nichole received a call from Jill asking if she’d like to explore opening up a shave ice business. Within days, the plan was in motion. A year later, their first location launched May of 2023 in the heart of Los Angeles, California.
We’re extremely passionate about shave ice and perfecting our product. We offer gourmet shave ice which is a product that was not available in the market prior to Nobuko Shave Ice. We took a deep dive into the science of enhancing flavor and came up with a proprietary blend that allows us to provide the perfect fluffy ice and flavor. Our specialty blends are inspired from all over the globe and loved by all that try them.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were most impactful in our journey is our creativity, background in business and focus.
Set clear goals and timelines. Without a clear destination, you’ll struggle to stay focused and make progress toward your objectives.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Overcoming challenges, building and developing essential skills and knowledge has been a group effort. We have leaned on each other as well as our friends and family.
