We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jill Swanstrom a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jill, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I actually originally went to school for chemistry and physics. I was a huge science nerd, and was in a great college on scholarship, but being in a lab was draining, and I wasn’t happy. I started doing hair and makeup for my roommate before she would go out, and then her friends started asking me to do their hair and makeup. I absolutely fell in love with making people feel beautiful. With my science background, I also found a huge passion in looking into ingredients in cosmetics and knowing what their purpose is in each product.
Completely on faith, I quit college and enrolled in beauty school. I have now been a hair stylist for over 15 years, and it’s led me to travel the world and connect with other beauty professionals from all over. I’ve also educated for 3 major product companies, own my own salon, and couldn’t love what I do more.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At JIVE Hair Studio, our mission is to foster a dynamic environment where creativity thrives, education flourishes, and everyone feels empowered to achieve their full potential. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional hair artistry while prioritizing growth and development of our team and the broader community. Through mentorship, collaboration, and continual learning, we aim to inspire confidence, elevate industry standards, and create a supportive space where talent can shine and careers can flourish.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am a constant student. It is so important to always be open to learning and taking in constructive feedback.
Collaboration is far more important than competition. If you have a competitive mindset, you limit yourself to more opportunities.
Failure means you’re growing. Don’t be afraid to try new things for fear of failure. Failing is part of the journey.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents are a huge part of where I am today. I grew up on a farm, so having a great work ethic was a non-negotiable for them. They’ve also taught me a lot about overcoming hardships in life and persevering through really tough times.
