We were lucky to catch up with Jim Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jim, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Well it started in public school, I was always drawing and at one time the teacher had cork board in the hallway with all my drawings, they then proceeded to bring in an art teacher to teach my 3d, perspective , shading etc.. then off to high school, i didnt get the best marks in art class as i did what i wanted to draw and not the assignment but hey you cant tell an artist what to do lol. Adult life was mainly work like everyone else until a few years ago i went on disability and concentrated on making things, painting etc. It wasn’t until recently that i have really bloomed as im in an apartment building now and spend alot of time at my art desk. I have sold paintings as far as Seattle Washington, to London England and far south as Florida.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As my artistic career is doing pretty good at the moment , I have a few regular customers in the states, and have a friend in st.thomas Ontario that owns a collectible store and sell some of my paintings through him as well . I am on disability so i have tons of time to learn new techniques etc. I have also done a few commissions which were great !
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Dont give up on a sketch, you never know.
Dont take the easy way out of a painting, research the details .
A painting may take weeks to complete or 2 days, you never know !
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would paint and create like crazy to leave my mark on the world.
