Meet Jimmy James

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jimmy James a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jimmy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I Found My Purpose Through My Faith in Jesus

I grew up in church, but life had a way of testing me early. My parents went through a messy divorce when I was just six years old, shaping the person I would become in ways I didn’t understand at the time.

In 1985, tragedy struck when I lost my father to a heart attack. Just five years later, in 1990, my mother passed away from cancer. By then, I was playing in a semi pro glam band called Hott Shott and living the “sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll” lifestyle.

My first suicide attempt came in 1989, before my mom died. I swallowed a whole bottle of painkillers and washed it down with liquor. My sister, who had slept through smoke alarms before, somehow heard me choking on my own vomit through a closed bedroom door. She rolled me onto my side and called an ambulance.

The doctor told my mom I had a 50/50 chance to live and warned that I might suffer brain damage. But I survived. Just months later, I was in a car accident that nearly killed me—my vehicle pinned between two trees, just inches from certain death.

In 1995, I gave my life back to Jesus. I joined a Christian rock band, started attending Bible college, and tried to walk the right path. But I had a pattern: I sabotaged my own success. Over the next three decades, I faced divorce, heartache, addiction, and more suicide attempts.

Through it all, by the grace of God, He never let go of me.

In 2024, out of the blue, Christian artist Paul Colman reached out and said he wanted to produce my record. By that time, I had already lived in Nashville twice—once in 2019 and again in 2022—and I thought my dreams were over.

On December 28, 2022, I hit my lowest point, I failed as a husband, father and I felt like the world would be better off without me. I rented a motel room, bought a box of razor blades, got drunk, and planned to end my life. But the New Bedford Police Department intervened and saved me.

I spent three weeks in a psych ward, then moved into a men’s sober house. Later, I transitioned into a rooming house, got a job, and spent the next three years slowly rebuilding my life.

Then came January 2025. In a moment of desperation, I cried out to God: “What do You want from me?” And I meant it.

Now, on August 14, 2025, I will step onto the main stage at SoulFest in Greenfield, Massachusetts, playing bass guitar for Paul Colman. My prayer is that this moment will open doors for me to share my story of recovery and redemption—to give others hope that no matter how far they’ve fallen, they can rise again.

The best is yet to come.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with strong ties to Nashville, Tennessee, Jimmy James is a musician who blends the grit of blues and rock with the soul of faith-based music. His songs tell stories of struggle, redemption, and the search for something greater, drawing from both life’s hardest moments and the hope that keeps us moving forward.

With a voice that carries both raw honesty and deep conviction, Jimmy’s music spans from blues-driven anthems to soulful Christian ballads, reflecting the tension between doubt and belief. Whether wrestling with faith in a world that feels broken or finding light in the darkness, his songs offer something real—a journey through the valleys, always searching for the mountaintop.

Splitting time between New England and Nashville, Jimmy James brings the best of both worlds—the working-class resilience of the North and the storytelling traditions of the South—to his music. As the driving force behind Swamp Yankee Revival, he’s crafting songs that speak to the heart, whether through gritty blues riffs or deeply personal reflections on faith and redemption.

For those who crave music with truth, soul, and a message of hope, Jimmy James delivers.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I lost both my parents at a young age and spent years battling addiction, surviving car wrecks, and even suicide attempts. But through it all, God never gave up on me. By His grace alone, I’m still here—and I believe it’s for a reason. Today, I share my story of redemption and hope in Jesus, praying it reaches those who feel forgotten. I’m available to speak in churches, prisons, and addiction centers—anywhere someone needs to know that if God can save me, He can save anyone.
1. A Heart for People
I carry deep compassion rooted in my-own pain and redemption. I’ve walked through fire—loss, addiction, and darkness—but instead of growing cold, my heart has become more open. I feel people’s struggles because I’ve lived them. This gives me a unique ability to connect, comfort, and remind others that no one is too far gone for grace. My heart isn’t just soft—it’s strong, and it beats for others.

2. The Gift of Music
My music isn’t just talent—it’s testimony. Whether I’m playing bass, guitar, or singing it’s truth, it’s more than sound—it’s healing. God has taken my gift and shaped it into something that speaks life over addiction, pain, and hopelessness. My songs carry the weight of my journey and the light of my faith, creating space for others to feel seen, heard, and lifted.

3. Life Experience
I’ve lived through what most wouldn’t survive—losing my parents young, addiction, car wrecks, suicide attempts. But I’m still here. And because of that, I carry a wisdom that can’t be taught in a classroom. Every scar tells a story, and I’ve turned those stories into a message of hope. My past isn’t baggage—it’s a bridge. And my life proves that God still saves, still heals, and still uses broken people for His glory.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

“I don’t know if I’ve got a decade left, a week, or just a day — but however much time I’ve got, I want to spend it helping others and giving them hope. I’ve learned that even if you can’t change the whole world, you can plant a seed in someone’s life that might grow into something beautiful — something that lasts for generations.”
