We recently connected with Jimmy Marcheso and have shared our conversation below.
Jimmy, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
In my youth my resilience came from a need to be seen.
As I’ve gotten older it’s come from the rush of trying new things, failing and pushing myself to grow.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve lived a million lives as an artist — a performer in a conservatory environment, on a national tour of a children’s musical, a director of opera on the staging staff at San Francisco Opera — and then when the pandemic hit and all my work was wiped I moved to the communication arts in business and advertising. And I feel like here, in business – where strategy and design meet – is my creative happy place.
This journey of experimenting is what led to creating Bath & Pajama – it is an amalgamation of everything I have done before. Theatre to design to parenting — all of my mistakes have given me the confidence to take such an audacious swing like creating a brand from scratch.
Bath & Pajama is a sophisticated, playful and interactive family lifestyle brand. We help families relax and connect
through bedtime rituals and beautiful sensory products.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Adaptability, congeniality and humor.
I’ve always tried to go where opportunity and interest meet. When you hit a road block with one of those two things, it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate your course. Also, being a nice human and fun to work with will take you far. Being a personality hire is a real thing and sometimes that can get you in the door — but when you add technical skills on top of that you are unstoppable.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Our customers at Bath & Pajama are people who care about the quality of time they spend with their children. They seek connection with them and know that that is more important than any other relationship your child will have. Bath & Pajama takes moments around bed, bath and hygiene and turns them into special moments. We are that resource for them. We help you and your children be excited about doing the things that might be frustrating or new or hard to focus on — so that you can focus on connecting.
