Meet Jingjing Fang

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jingjing Fang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jingjing, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

The most important thing for me to maintain my creativity is appreciating beautiful things, such as films and movies from great artists, photographs, media arts, and traditional or digital paintings, as much as I can. One of the quickest ways to do this is by collecting art from websites like Pinterest. During work breaks, I spend about 10 minutes browsing through these sites. Sometimes, an interesting image catches my attention, and I click on it to study its artistic techniques, connecting it with ideas already stored in my “art brain.”

When I encounter too many similar styles of art, I simply save them to my account for future reference. This is an efficient way to gather a wide range of ideas in a short time and helps develop a consistent creative habit.

Another effective method is visiting exhibitions. Experiencing art in person offers details and depth that can’t be captured on a screen.

Finally, I believe in trying out ideas as much as possible. Whenever inspiration strikes, I quickly sketch my thoughts on paper to see how they might evolve into a complete work.

In summary, this combination of exploring, collecting, and experimenting forms my art-learning system, helping me keep my creativity alive and thriving.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Hi, my name is Jingjing Fang. I graduated from UCLA’s M.S. in Architecture and Urban Design program in 2022, and I am currently working in the VFX industry as an Unreal Engine Artist and 3D Artist. My work involves crafting stunning 3D environments in Unreal Engine for real-time virtual productions, cinematic animations, games, advertisements, and architectural visualizations. I utilize a variety of software, including Cinema 4D, Maya, and Substance, to meet the diverse needs of my projects.

I excel in adapting to different artistic styles, whether it’s creating something fancy, eerie, mystical, or rich with natural landscapes. Over the years, I’ve developed a unique visual language that integrates lighting, cinematography, materials, and storytelling, drawing from my extensive design experience and aesthetic foundation. My work balances meeting mainstream and client-specific expectations while cultivating a distinctive personal style.

Many of my creations evoke a dreamy, otherworldly atmosphere, often inspired by my own dreams. These dreamscapes become the foundation for my concept art, which I sketch during the day and develop further into detailed designs. This process of blending boundless imagination with technical expertise has resulted in a wide range of projects that resonate with diverse audiences.

I believe it’s an artist’s responsibility to inspire and bring joy to others. That’s why, during my personal exhibition in Los Angeles this year, I prioritized creating interactive installations to connect deeply with the audience while staying true to the core values of being an artist.

You can explore more of my work on my website, fangjingjingart.com. Additionally, my virtual environments can be seen in FOX’s hit TV show The Masked Singer and The Wonderful World of Disney: Holiday Spectacular (2024). I hope my art sparks inspiration and joy for all who experience it.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three Key Qualities
Passion for Art: Enthusiasm is the strongest drive to keep learning and pushing through challenges. If you want to succeed, you must stay committed and never back down.
Keeping Up with Skills: Continuously learn the latest art techniques to stay aligned with the times.
Building Connections: Build relationships during your work, as they can help open doors in the future.
Advice for Beginners
Online courses can help you learn skills systematically and build connections, but don’t over-rely on them. They’re useful for technical growth but limited for developing artistic vision or unique thinking. For creative work, draw from your own memories, thoughts, and insights.

When building relationships, focus on personal growth and confidence to naturally attract others. Networking is a two-way street—authenticity is key.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m open to all forms of collaboration, including working with photographers, directors, concept artists, and even music artists. If you’re interested in incorporating virtual visual art into commercials, short videos, or media art projects, I’d love to connect and explore possibilities together.

Feel free to reach out to me via email at [email protected] or connect with me on LinkedIn (Jingjing Fang) or Instagram (Jingjing_zqer). Let’s create something amazing together!
