Meet Jingjing Sun

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jingjing Sun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jingjing, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

As a freelance illustrator and motion media designer, I usually keep my creativity going by doing the following:
1. Stick to browsing image websites for fifteen minutes to half an hour every day and categorize the saved images, which is very important both for accumulating inspiration and improving aesthetics.
2. Get in touch with other disciplines or fields to learn from others and gain new and interesting knowledge, including photography/design/astronomy/biology/medicine and so on.
3. Do more creative training, even in the bottleneck, every day randomly draw something small, there will be progress.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am in Atlanta as a graduate student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I also work as a freelance illustrator and motion media designer. Most of my work is in a surrealistic, dark style. Representative works include “Lust & Temperance”, “Monster – DIVINATION WINE”, “Target”, etc.
Strengths: Editorial Illustration, Advertising Illustration, MG Animation and 3D Animation

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Qualities: creativity, perseverance, optimism
2. Skills: Feeling, Capturing, Expressing
3. Of the three qualities, I think optimism is the most needed and overlooked as a freelancer. Especially in the early stages of just starting freelancing, work is hard to see by the public and often requires creators to be patient. So staying optimistic and continuing to create is often the most important thing creators need during this process. So how to stay optimistic, I think there are the following points: 1. self-confidence, believing that their work is always the best; 2. trying to contact different fields, to open up the mind and at the same time can also liberate the state of mind; 3. talk to the creators who have experienced this stage or are in this stage, there may be a change in mindset.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

1. Yes, I am looking for a partner or collaboration.
2. Type of cooperation: product packaging design, advertising illustration, editorial illustration, MG animation or 3D animation.
3. You can get in touch with me via email:jsun79136@gmail.com
