Meet Jingwen Chen

We recently connected with Jingwen Chen and have shared our conversation below.

Jingwen, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?

I have been involved in sports competitions since I was a child, particularly in Taekwondo and girls’ basketball. My journey with Taekwondo started early, and I trained diligently, achieving notable success that helped me gain admission to a prestigious middle school. Although I eventually stopped practicing Taekwondo, the discipline and perseverance I developed during those years left a lasting impact on me.

In elementary school, I joined the school basketball team and continued playing all the way through to university. Basketball requires both teamwork and individual effort, and we had multiple high-intensity practices and games each week. These experiences taught me the importance of time management, resilience, and the ability to stay focused on long-term goals.

During a university league game, I unfortunately injured my knee and had to undergo anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. This was a significant setback, but it also became a testament to my self-discipline. I dedicated myself to the rehabilitation process, and within about a month, I was able to walk without crutches. The determination and hard work required for my recovery further solidified my ability to persevere through challenges. My self-discipline, honed through years of balancing rigorous training schedules with academic responsibilities, has continued to be a guiding principle in my life.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As an industrial designer, my primary focus is on creating innovative, sustainable, and user-friendly products that improve daily life. My journey in industrial design has been driven by a passion for solving real-world problems through thoughtful and creative design solutions.

What I Do:
My work involves a wide range of activities, from conceptualizing and sketching initial ideas to developing detailed prototypes and collaborating with engineers and manufacturers to bring these designs to life. Each project is an opportunity to push the boundaries of what’s possible and to create products that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Exciting Aspects:
One of the most exciting aspects of my work is the ability to blend creativity with practicality. I enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect balance between innovative design and functionality. Additionally, I am particularly passionate about sustainable design practices. By choosing eco-friendly materials and processes, I aim to minimize the environmental impact of the products I create, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Current Focus:
Currently, my primary focus is on my graduation thesis, which explores how to improve face-to-face communication among young people through outdoor social activities. In our increasingly digital world, many young people miss out on the benefits of in-person interactions. My research aims to design and promote outdoor activities that encourage socialization and communication, helping to build stronger, more connected communities. By facilitating these interactions, I hope to address issues such as social isolation and the decline in interpersonal communication skills.

Future Goals:
Looking ahead, I am excited about the potential of emerging technologies in industrial design. From smart materials to advanced manufacturing techniques, the future holds immense possibilities for creating even more innovative and sustainable products. I am committed to staying at the forefront of these developments and leveraging them to create designs that make a meaningful impact.

Though I do not have my own brand, my work as an industrial designer is a testament to my dedication to improving the world through design. By continually pushing the envelope and striving for excellence, I aim to contribute to a better and more innovative future.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Creativity and Innovation

Importance: Creativity and innovation are the lifeblood of industrial design. Being able to think outside the box and come up with unique solutions to problems is crucial.
Advice: To develop this quality, I recommend constantly challenging yourself with new projects and ideas. Engage in activities that stimulate your creativity, such as sketching, brainstorming sessions, and exploring different design fields. Don’t be afraid to take risks and experiment with unconventional solutions.

2. Attention to Detail

Importance: Precision and meticulousness are essential in design. Small details can make a big difference in the functionality and aesthetics of a product.
Advice: Cultivate this skill by practicing detailed work regularly. Pay close attention to every aspect of your design, from initial sketches to final prototypes. Learn to appreciate the nuances that contribute to the overall quality of your work. Reviewing and iterating on your designs can also help improve your attention to detail.

3. Effective Communication

Importance: Clear communication is vital for collaborating with clients, engineers, and other stakeholders. It ensures that your ideas are understood and implemented correctly.
Advice: Work on your communication skills by practicing both written and verbal forms. Present your ideas to others, seek feedback, and learn to articulate your thoughts clearly and concisely. Being an active listener is equally important, as it helps you understand the needs and perspectives of others involved in the project.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed, I have a go-to strategy that never fails: I lace up my sneakers and head out for some exercise. Getting outside and away from whatever’s stressing me out helps clear my mind. After a good sweat session, I come back, take a long, hot shower, and then hit the hay for a solid night’s sleep. It’s amazing how much better things look after a bit of fresh air, some endorphins, and a good snooze!
