We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jinx Ogé a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jinx, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
My motto is ‘I color my existence with my imagination.’ One of the ways, I continuously keep creativity alive is that I’m always evolving and changing. And with any project I create, a lot starts from within first. So whether it’s the fashion shows and designs I create, choreography, music, and music videos, it always comes with a reinvention of who I am. With that said, there are core aspects of myself I put into every one of my projects that will always be a part of the DNA of who I am and won’t be so different that I lose people who have followed me to this point. Another huge aspect of keeping creativity alive is the people I work with. The input from all my models, singers, and creative team has truly pushed me as a fashion designer in all the right ways. Over time this has become more than just my dream, and it’s become our dream. And with every opportunity we look at it as if it could be our last, and that mindset brings out the best and our brightest of work; because we really take nothing for granted.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m mainly known as a Fashion Designer and Music Artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This Pridefest Milwaukee 2024 I had the honor of being recognized for 15 years of working and performing with the festival, as well as putting together Haus of Ogé’s 7th and 8th fashion show. The next fashion show ‘Queens of Africa’ will feature all-new designs in November. This August is the debut for my 4th music video single ‘Turn Me On’ which features many LGBT+ talent from the community. In my free time, I’m also youtuber and volunteer in the LGBT+ community with my husband Micah Ogé.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Number 1 – Know Your Purpose In Life
A huge part of why I love doing what I do is because it links to my purpose and why I’m here on this earth. Since before I could remember, I loved making people look beautiful and creating art. And I still feel that to this day. So with every fashion show or project I do, it never feels like work. It feels like I’m meant to do this. That I’m supposed to be doing this. And I’m grateful to be doing what I love and to be able to push the standards of beauty. All of us apart of the brand feel we make a difference to the world around us.
Number 2 – The Company You Keep
The people around me have always been a huge part of where I am today. With that said, it’s important to have the right people around you. The right people will lift you up, cheer for you, and take you to places you’ve never thought you would go. The wrong people can derail you from reaching your dreams. Discerning between the two is important and can be the difference between success and failure.
Number 3 – Creating My Own Road
My path has always been different from most. There was no blueprint and there was no road paved for me. So much of what I’ve built and created was done from the ground up. When one creates their own brand or dreams a dream that doesn’t fit the normal of the world around them, it’s important to have a strong sense of identity. Any time I feel lost, my internal compass always points me to my magnetic north and I that’s how I know how to move forward and find my way.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Haus of Ogé is always open to connecting and collaborating with venues for fashion shows, music artists, and models of all colors, sizes, and backgrounds in our community. A big part of the brand’s mission is to challenge beauty standards and expand them because we believe that everyone should be able to feel otherworldly and beautiful. And all of our differences should be celebrated. Haus of Ogé also highlights LGBT+ fashion designs and models. Anyone interested in hosting a venue or being a model reach out on Instagram.
