We were lucky to catch up with Joa & Angie O’neal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joa & Angie, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience for us isn’t just about pushing through; its about redefining what strength looks like. As survivors of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, we have learned that movement is a privilege, not a punishment. When we first started posting workouts during the pandemic, our goal of course was to motivate others to keep moving, but we were doing it for us, too. It was a reminder that as long as we can move, we will and wanted to encourage our community to do the same. Now, five years later we continue to share that message; that movement is a celebration of what our bodies can do, no matter where we are in our journey. And its a plus that our resilience also comes from each other.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are a mother-daughter fitness duo and breast cancer and MS survivors who have been sharing workouts and health and wellness tips on social media since 2020. Our goal has always been to inspire movement in a way that feels fun, accessible, and empowering. We create targeted workout routines choreographed to popular music (with a heightened focus on full-body HIIT), blending fitness with joy, and sharing practical wellness advice to help others stay consistent and motivated.
One of the most exciting new additions to our brand is our HIIT PILATES series—a fusion of classical mat Pilates and high-intensity interval training. This series not only challenges the body in new ways but also makes strength and endurance training more dynamic and engaging. We launched it in 2025, hosting one class each month so far, and we’re thrilled to continue expanding it. It’s even more special because it’s a family affair—we’ve collaborated with our cousin (& niece) Cammy, a trained classical mat Pilates instructor and movement coach, who leads & brings her expertise to the series.
At the heart of everything we do is a simple message: movement is for everyone. Whether through social media, in-person classes, or new fitness programs, we’re committed to helping people build strength, confidence, and consistency in a way that feels good. We’re excited to keep growing and reaching more people with this mantra & mission to #makeitmove!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
We would have to say adaptability, consistency and community.
1. In life, when you face life-altering events, you quickly realize that harshness won’t serve you. We have had to learn to adapt in many ways—whether it was adjusting workouts to what we both could handle, shifting our mindset around our goals for our fitness movement and who we were trying to reach, or even navigating social media in its rapidly evolving climate. Adaptability helped us stay consistent even when things didn’t or don’t go as planned.
As for advice, if you’re early in your journey embrace the idea that progress doesn’t have to be linear. Be open to adjusting and trying new approaches. No matter your niche, start where you are and give yourself permission to evolve.
2. The biggest lesson we learned is that consistency is more important than intensity. There have been days where we aren’t feeling it, but even showing up in small ways helped us stay in motion. And because of that we’re still here committed to consistency and not perfection. Our advice would be to start small and stay steady. You don’t have to go all in over-night. Whether it’s a fitness routine, a social media presence, or a health goal, small daily efforts add up. The key is to keep showing up, even if it looks different than you expected.
3. One of the most powerful things we’ve learned is that resilience isn’t built alone. Having each other as accountability partners keeps us going and reminds us that community is everything. The support, encouragement, and shared experiences from others gives us even more motivation to keep moving forward.
We would encourage folks to find your people. Whether its family, friends, or an online community, having support makes the journey so much easier.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Beyond our personal bond and our longing to expand our reach, the support of our community thus far has been priceless. From family and friends who showed up when we needed them, to the people on and offline who resonated with or were motivated by our journey, we realized early on that resilience is strengthened through connection. We are often reminded that we are not alone and that our movement could inspire so many to keep moving.
