We were lucky to catch up with Joanna Gerard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joanna , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think in my case it’s partly genetic and partly the way God made me, or made my Astrological chart, haha. My mom is a Real Estate Agent and received her license at sixty-nine years old. She also runs another business. My dad spent his whole career being extremely successful in sales and business. Basically I was taught from a really early age to be driven and not to quit. It worked for me, because I have always been a freedom chaser. I will never be happy sitting around watching TV all day, I didn’t even own a TV for 12 years. This was great because I taught myself Astrology during this time.
Also, I’m resilient because I believe I can. I visualize what I want, write it down and then I work for it. This is something I like to help my clients and students do as well. I believe the highest form of creativity is reinventing yourself.
I’m also incredibly stubborn by nature, and I also have OCD. The combination of all these things makes a resilient person. Sometimes what we perceive to be our flaws ends up being our strengths. It just depends on how we look at it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a Psychic, Astrologer, Writer, Voice-Over Artist, On-Air talent, Entrepreneur and Teacher. I love to share my knowledge with people which is one of the reasons I created my Praying Mantis Astrology Oracle Deck. It’s great for anyone wanting to learn Astrology and strengthen their own intuition.
The truth is I do a lot of things and I love it this way. I really enjoy living a creative lifestyle. I travel to California quite often to work, and I should be going back soon to do a show. We are unsure of the exact dates though. I’m also starting a new adventure this summer which I’m excited about as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first and maybe most important thing is to really not care what people think. I’m an entrepreneur, so basically my mind never stops. I literally have over 10,000 new ideas in a day. People have told me, not all people but some, that I’m crazy and it’s never going to work. I followed my own intuition and it ended up working. The second thing is individuality. I have never been the jealous type and have always been genuinely happy for people when they succeed. I never felt the need to put people down to make myself feel better. I prefer to lift people up.
I have dealt with jealousy from others but I never understood because comparing yourself and/or competing with others is a sure way to fail. It blocks success. We are all individuals, we are all unique.
Lastly, determination is key. If you can visualize it, you really can make it happen. Just be prepared to work hard for it.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for creative people to partner with. I love to be on the radio, TV, podcasts, etc. I have the most fun with creative people. In California I get to work with Production guys,Sound engineers, Photographers. When you work with creative people you never really feel like you are working.
