We were lucky to catch up with Joanna “JoJo” Rosholm recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joanna “JoJo” , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Definitely my dad. He worked two full time jobs when I was growing up. He was reliable and took his work seriously. And my grandma who watched me while he worked! She filled her days by caring for others (as a registered nurse, my caregiver and in her local senior center) and always showed up with a diplomatic point of view. To this date, I still couldn’t tell you who/which party she voted for!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I work in public relations with a social impact twist. The White House ingrained in me a need to have a greater purpose in my work. All of our clients span a wide array of sizes, industries and lifespans. What they all have in common is a distinct vision of how the world could be and an original approach to making a meaningful impact.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Be curious. Asking questions does not come naturally to me, it’s a skill I continue to work on. And it’s always hard to ask a question you think is naive or silly – but it never, ever is as long as you own it.
2. Think 5 steps ahead. Whether you’re building a strategy for a client or putting a meeting on the calendar, attention to detail comes from thinking about the next five steps and anticipating what you and your team might need.
3. Have an informed opinion. If you’re working for someone or for a client, they want to know that you’ve done research and that you have thoughts on a best approach.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I have trained myself to immediately make a list and parcel it out in priority order with time increments. “Clear my inbox for 10 minutes until 10:50, Answer Slacks until 11a, Work on client presentation until 11:30am and so on.
