We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jocelin Deneweth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelin, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
Creativity block is killer, especially in a writing intensive area that I’ve found myself in. As a writer, it’s infuriating to sit in front of a blank page and have nothing to fill the page with. You have a story…you have ideas…but nothing is coming out. It’s like a puzzle, except your missing a few pieces that you desperately need to finish the picture. My biggest stretch of time with a creativity block was when my daughter was born. A few months before, I was diving into social media to promote my books, and I was posting/ participating in social media every day. I started doing these author interviews, and I was having a blast. Then came the light of my life. All the energy I had went toward my baby girl. Whenever I found what little time I had to either write or do anything author related, there was nothing left to give. I went silent on social media for months. Now, how did I beat it? As my daughter has gotten older and is becoming more independent, I’ve forced myself back into it. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and I just had to make myself see it. When I was growing up, I used to be an avid reader. That stopped when my adult responsibilities took over. So, I started making myself read again and dig deep into the craft. As an author, I found the best way for me to beat my creativity block was to go back down to basics and remember how I got into writing in the first place.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an author, who is now branching off and exploring the different sides of social media. I’ve done several author interviews, participated in book fairs, and delved deeply into what makes me sellable. I am a lover of stories, and I’ve been dreaming of telling mine since I was in middle school. Now, I also get to talk to different author’s and how they tell their stories.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativity, persistence, and patience are the three qualities that have been the most impactful to my writing journey. Building those skills and realizing that there is no true hurry for success has hit my hard this year. I’m not an author to make money. I am an author because I have stories to tell and love doing it. My biggest piece of advice is for you to sit back and think about the reason behind why you’re doing what your doing. That’s what has helped me. Am I doing it for money or am I doing it because I love it?

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with someone in more ways than one. I’ve always dreamed of partnering up with another author to create a unique story. I’d just need someone who writes in the fantasy genre and who shares the same dream of collaboration. I also have started fairly recently to do these author interviews. I would love to add more interesting and diverse writers to my roster. You can contact me always everywhere, but I’d much rather you just shoot me an email to: [email protected].
